Imported 1994 Rav4 Airconditioning - What Gas Type?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

A while back I reported that my aircon wasn't working in my M plated RAV4 import. The garage reckoned it was likely to be low on gas, but for them to find out would cost £90. Since then I have found out the recharge kits are only £30 on eBay and the pressure guages to check are £10. I have bought the guage now and intend to check the pressure tonight. If it's low but not totally empty that will be a good sign and I can recharge it.

Does anyone know if the RAV4 uses the old R12/R14 gas (much harder to get hold of), or the newer R134a which is pretty easy to get hold of. It doesn't say anywhere under the bonnet and the two must not be mixed!

Thanks

The answer is that is is r134a.

the technician i asked told me he could tell because the input valve would be smaller otherwise (this one was quite a bit bigger than one on a tyre)

Lifted the bonnet of mine tonight..Needed to top up the washer level :D :D

Looking at the the under side rim of my RAV Bonnet, it had a sticker on the left side (as you look at the car)stating only to use R134A type gas for the air con... Dont know if the MKI have this sticker in place.....

yeah mine turned out to by 134a too, it just for whatever reason didn't have the sticker. The air con bloke said he could tell from the width of the nozzle (wider for 134a).

By the way it wasn't the gas in the end that was the problem.. 3 relays were totaly missing!
