Hi, :help:

Completely new to this site, registered yesterday as I found it whilst looking for info on gearbox problems with the Rav4.

Mine is 2002 D4D 5dr model with 48K, whilst driving at about 60 I felt two small judders (like fuel kangaroo) and then without any other warning the engine revved like mad in 5th gear, changed to try other gears and same thing.

Once I stopped and tried to pull off again the engine revs and only moves inches, the AA man who recovered me said either the gearbox or diff !

Has anyone else experienced any problems like this ?

Any info would be great.

Cheers

RAV4Girl,

Sorry to read about your problem...

This sounds a little like the Dual Mass Fly Wheel... the symtoms you describe... It's a part of the gear box that protects the Clutch and enables smoth gear changes and drive...When this fails you can't move properly...Have you got a warranty on the car or is there still any time left on the dealer one...Might be worth checking this out as they are ££££ to fix....

I could be wrong.... ;) Has a garage inspected the car yet.....

Hi Chatman,

Thanks for the info, the garage are assessing tomorrow luckily I do have warranty so I guess this should cover it ??? not being technically minded ! what I would like to know if it is the Dual Mass Fly Wheel can it happen again if they fix it ? or what causes it, I have towed a caravan twice since I got the Rav and although the weight ratio is well under the 85% recommended can't help but worry ??!!

Cheers

That part should be cheaper than the DMFW  ... this is however down to wear and tear items.....

Did the RAV do lots of towing before you brought it....Be intriged to know the price of a clutch for the D4D

None as far as I know, the toyota garage fitted the tow bar for me and I've towed the caravan twice - I've had the car for 86 days.........some wear and tear !!! Will let you know if I have to pay

Well Done Chatman you certainly know your stuff, had a call from the garage to say that the dual mass fly wheel was faulty and went, this in turn has damaged the clutch..... however, it's all being sorted under warranty and both items are being replaced and so I'm happy about that, concern though, hope it doesn't go in another 48K !

Thanks for your advice

yes had problems big time fly wheel broken just out of warranty now taking toyota to court as they refuse to acknowledge their have been major problems with this part I suggest you check all other sites marked fly wheel failure rav 4. If yours is under warranty get a guarantee after they fix it thats if they dont tell you its fair wear and tear which is their cop out. Have also heard someone has had three fly wheels break on their rav 4 I will never buy another Toyota ever. You will need to talk to trading standards if they refuse to fix this problem. Good luck

Hi,

Have had the work completed under warranty they didn't say that it was wear 'n' tear they said that it was a faulty fly wheel..... the service manager stated that there had been some problems with years 02, 53 & 03 not sure what year yours is but hope this helps.

cheers

Hi chatman thanks for info please can you let me know which dealers gave you the information as my local dealer denies all knowledge of any such problems. If there is anyone else out there needing any info as I have in my possesion technical data sent anonymously through the post acknowledging Toyota has indeed had problems with the fly wheel. I have been in the motor trade for 30 years and never ever have known a flywheel to fail.

Ivan,

From the details that Rav4Girl gave I assumed it was something wrong with the drive system... namely the DMFW or clutch.. as it turned out both were at fault.:eek: I have not come across this problem in my RAV but have seen a few owners have problems with theres and also some othere Toyota models as well (Avensis I beleive) :ffs: :ffs:

If Toyota do indead know that this is a problematic part then we should demand they do something about it rather than waiting for this part to fail..... :ffs: :(
