Hi all, first post so go easy on me!!!

I got a 96 previa. When the revs go above 3000 - 3500, there is a whistle noise appears from underneath. Any one else had this?

Thanks Dazza

On my old one it was the exhaust that would whistle. Once I got over a certain speed, it would die away, but at about 40mph in overdrive it was annoying.

Previa's do not have Turbo's as they have petrol engines. What's more they produce far more power without one than the diesel Estima's do with one.

Could be your exhaust manifold leaking. I would start here first before looking deeper. Start the car and then get under the driver side and listen for a slight popping noise. Get someone to rev the engine and/or hold the revs high at around 2500-3000 and see if the popping noise increases or turns to your whistle noise. If so you will have confirmed the gasket. A relatively simple job to do.

Hi all, the original post was some time ago. But i can confirm that i changed the rear box part of the exhaust & the whistle dissapeared.

Glad you got it sorted, I have been told that there is a piece of metal in the exhaust that comes loose and has been known to cause the whistling as it flaps under the pressure in the exhaust

As a virgin on the site I am glad to see this topic as I have a 97 Previa GS that sounds like a turbo diesel at the moment. The Service shop said there is rock all wrong with the exhaust, but as I have read, put your foot down and the thing starts whistling like a boiling kettle!!!!!

Time to get down to the roots!!

Moose

Could be a collapsed matrix in the CAT or a blowing exhaust manifold gasket
