Avensis Recall

Toyota Ireland have issued a recall for 04/05 Avensis with the electric Motor assisted Power Steering. Mine happens to be one of the recalls. There might be a possibility that connections may be loose due to insufficient strenght at the intermediate shaft and sliding yoke, which connect the steering wheel to the steering gearbox assembly.

They say that in the worst case where a large force is repeatedly applied to the connections and shaft, the connection may become loose or separate, which could result in steering disconnection. Fancy that!

Has there been any other news on that?

Thanks for the news, nothings appeared on the VOSA site about the recall yet

http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp (not sure if Ireland is different).

Do they have different models available in Ireland? Possibly UK ones in Northern Ireland and European ones in the RoI? If so, it could explain some differences in recalls I suppose.

ALL avensis are built here in the UK at burnaston, they are not produced anywhere else in the world.

even the japaneese ones come from the UK

There are different model in the RoI - the models are called Aura/Strata/Luna which I believe are roughly equivalent to T2/T3/T4, though I don't believe SatNav is standard on any models here. (Was told by a dealer in the North that the Toyota SatNav would cover 60% of the area in the South. I said that's the bit I know, it's the other 40% that I'd need help on...)

It seems to be a little more difficult to get online recall information on RoI models, and I don't know if the smae recalls apply across both the UK and Ireland.

My Avensis Luna is the T3 model if thats any help and if my car is been recalled then i cant see why the models in England are not . They all came from the same place.

Good one...!

I think I might call MR T tomorrow and ask about this....I'd hate to be troggin along the motorway and then find out my steering doesnt work...

I know that the pre 03 Avensis ranges had recalls on them for a steering issue, my t3x I had for a few months had been recalled for an inspection when it was driven by the previous owner...now I've got a t4 04 plate so I might find out about this one...

Good post,

I was under the impression that the steering fault was only with avensis' built in 2003. I guess i could be wrong on this case, but on other hand i had my vin number checked by toyota cos i've developed a steering rattle and vibration at 14000 miles in the floor pan region and my vin is not effected. My car is a 2004 54 plate. I was told when i contacted my local dealer it could be the steering shaft splins or chattering gears in the steering system. On inspection i was told its more than likly a dry steering joint where the column joins the rack, has my nosie and vibration are only once in awhile. If i get any noise or vibration its only under braking at an island when selecting lanes, or junctions hence slight turning, or when parking in tight spaces when swapping steering lock.

Had you been getting any noise from the steering column/wheel to suggest there was a problem? I am hearing a sort of "whooshing" sound when I turn the wheel on my 04 plate avensis.

juliep Looking at your car its a t-spirit. Either if its a 2.0 petrol or diesel its not effected. THe only cars effected are avensis' with electric power steering these being the 1.8 vvti's from 03 onwards.
