'99 Sr Servicing

My SR up until now has been serviced at an official Toyota dealership.

It now needs a "B" service at 81k miles and I've just been quoted £315 which seems very expensive.

What should I be paying, and what does everyone else do for cars of this age? How would an Independant compare, both in cost and amount of work done?

I was quoted £300 for a B service on my 80k GT (98) at Toyota in Guildford (which is usually a rip-off for everything). I decided to go independent and they were looking for 220 - 260  ........thought they would be much cheaper than that. Eventually got it done for 149 out of town.

I didn't have full toyota service history anyway. I guess your car is worth about £4-4.5k so it might be worth it if you're going to sell it in the next year.

Yeah it depends a bit on when you want to sell it. If you are going to sell soonish then it might be worth getting it done at Toyota but have a talk with them and see if you can get them to reduce it if they don't spend a fiver on screenwash etc. You should be able to get the price down even further by providing your own oils etc as they rip you off for everything.

Personally though I wouldn't go near Toyota I would use a well trusted local mechanic or do the work myself. The Autodata CD specifies everything you need to do on each service - most of which is common sense, but you do forfit the service history that way. If you do choose to do DIY servicing make sure you keep a record of everything you do - keep all receipts for oil etc - to a lot of people that's just as good and you can legally call it service history

Arrrrrghhhhhhhhh, it looks like £300+ from Mr T: "I pity the fool who gets their car serviced anywhere else".

I will be keeping this car until it falls apart, so can anyone recommend a good independant in the South East?

Thanks again chaps.

I used a place called C.A.R.S. in Woking and it was 150 for full service, although the invoice seemed a bit short for a full service. dunno if thats anywhere near you though.

I got the cam belt done there at the same time and everyting is fine since and they were easy to deal with. Sorry, its only been to the garage once so can't really recommend the place. I did pick the cheapest (or the only reasonable price, depending on which way you look at it)

Kevin.

Millway in andover. Discount for TOC gold, for £260 they did the 'B' service, plus cambelt and alternator belt change on my 1998 GT. Friendly people, and the car came back sounding smoother, cleaned inside and out, thoroughly impressed. Will definatly use them again.
