Tyre Noise......

Recommended Posts

Have been reading the forums for well over 6 months and monitoring people's views on which tyres to go for when replacing the original duelers.

In the end, I bought 4 Goodyear Wrangler All Weather M+S from mytyres (and got my TOC gold member discount).

Just returned from having them fitted, and can't get over how quiet the car is inside now :D

That's the best £310 I spent since I got the car! (+ £63 for fitting and old tyre disposal etc)

 Where did they dispose of them?.. in a cementary with a full ensembly of mourners etc.. 63 quid for fitting and disposal!!! :ffs: we would have done that for 40 quid... next time shop around for fitting.

Glad you like your Goodyears though :)

Tyre test report.....

http://www2.sicherbestellen.de/tests/10/Go...fentestcom.html

2.6 is a good test result, some time back i was looking at the Hankook Optimo K406, it had a 2.4 test result, bottom line was worse in the snow, but quieter on the road :) .

Well, just done a drive down to Bicester over the weekend.

On the motorway the noise level was greatly reduced.

Coming home on Sunday we were driving through the torential downpour of rain that has caused some road flooding arount the Stockport area.

So I just had to test the RAV by driving through these huge puddles, and it handled really well :)

Even on the motorway in the rain the noise wasn't really much of a problem.

All in all, it looks and also feels like a good all-round tyre.

need to replace the two fronts on my RAV very soon. It has Toyo Tranpath's fitted at moment. Best price from web was £75 (have web site on work pc not home) mytyres wanted £88 quid..

The rears are fine and have plenty tread left , so my question is...Shall I buy 4 different and change rears when worn or go for Toyo's again on front. I know it's not a good idea to mix and match being permanent 4 wheel drive... or can I??:unsure:

No one ever answered Chatman's final question above regarding having different tyres on front and rear. My RAV had 2 new Bridgestone's on the front and old Toyo Tranpaths on the rear when I got it 'used' from a main dealer, these will soon need replacing. My question is - would it be ok to get 2 new Goodyear Wrangler All Weathers for the rear, and keep Bridgestones on the front and eventually when the Bridgestone's wear down, having Wranglers all round? It would be a long time before Bridgestone's wear down though, as still look brand new! So is it ok to have 2 different makes front and rear?

Personally, I would rather have the brand new tyres on the front of the car as these are the steering ones (something that I was told when I was learning to drive). It does pay to shop around for the tyres though, the tyres I bought came from France, so I suspect their prices are dependent on the exchange rate from € to £.

I am looking for some advice - If I buy new tyres online for example from mytyres.co.uk - How do they deliver them? Is it to your house, or a garage/mechanics of choice? If to your house, are they heavy? How are they packaged?

I have been quoted £113 per tyre for Goodyear All weathers which includes balancing, new valves and fitting. However mytyres.co.uk quotes only £80 per tyre. I've seen prices of £63 and even £40 for fitting that others have had fitted for 4 tyres so figure buying the tyres myself will save me at least £50. Any other tips or advice I should be aware of if I buy tyres myself first?

Thanks.

I got my last set of tyres from here link

I too weighed up the option of either getting myself and then arranging fitting. but these fitted them at my place of work and were prompt and reliable. little more than just tyre price but when you factor into fuel costs of finding some where and hassle, it works out best...... :D :D

I used Event Mobile Tyres when i had a set fitted to my IS200 a few years back, top service, very careful tyre technician and a good price considering they came to my home  .

IN reply to Tuffys question.

On a normal 2 wd I believe it makes no odds if you mix the tread patterns, as long as the front or the rear ones are the same.... they say that if you get into a skid/slide that the difference in tread patterns could actually do you a favour....

On a 4X4 I am not to sure if the same principle is the same. This makes me think that the tyre usage on a 4x4 will be more excessive than on a 2wd....

hope that helps a bit....Or perhaps someone who knows about tyres could elaborate further on this topic....

regards

Rob

You should expect greater wear on a 4x4, though the increase ineed not be much modern vehicles - a lot depends on how you drive!

The Freelander I sold when I bought my Rav4 last September did 48,000 miles on its first set of tyres (Wrangler) and still had over 6mm left after 30,000 on the replacement set (Synchron). My wifes Grand Vitara did 50,000 miles on its original tyres and the replacements were hardly worn when it was sold 15,000 miles later (Bridgestone).

The Yokohamas on my new Rav4 are showing wear after just 10,000 miles - down to 6mm so don't expect them to go much past 30,000 - but I tend to drive my Rav4 more briskly than my Freelander :)
