Hi All,

I have been investigating getting a car kit to connect my ipod to the cd changer socket. The few enquiries I have made seem to all boil down to the number of pins behind the unit.

So far I have established that the unit in my car model number 58827 is made by Matsush*ta, however the dealer says the only way to confirm the number of pins is to remove the unit to check (which seems weird).

My questions are:

1: Can anyone confirm the number of pins (12 or 6) behind this unit.

2: Has anyone fitted an ipod car kit themselves if so how easy was it to do.

3: Does anyone have recommendations on which product to buy based on sound, quality etc.

Hope you can help.

Regards

Hi

I fitted one myself, im a novice and found it easy once I had a functioning interface(the first supplied was faulty). It only takes minutes to take out the headunit although you have to be careful and not drop the headunit bolts behind the dash !,

I have a Dension icelinkplus and it works fine with my 2003 rav. I have a 58812 head unit with 5 + 7 pins (12). I have a cradle that the ipod sits in, but i could have had it hidden away in the arm rest as the head unit displays track info etc and the ipod also wouks from the strerring wheel controls which is a plus. I got mine from caraudioplus.co.uk - about £150.

best of luck,

Hi Spider, i see you have a 06 model, donn't know what model you have but on the XT5 the CD player is also an MP3 player. I just burn tracks on to a blank Cd in MP3 format, holds aprox 150 tracks and play in the cd player. No need to carry ipods about, much more convenient. Hope this helps. Baz

Hi Baz,

My player also plays MP3's. I do a lot of motorway jouneys and listen to audiobooks, podcasts etc rather than music all the time. It just so happens that sometimes I am not in the mood for the CD's I have at the time. I have an iPod video 60GB and getting this connected will give me more choices. I can then listen to content based on my mood.

Hi

Thanks for the info. Do you have any instruction guides for the head unit removal. I saw one on the web some weeks ago but the site is now offline :(

There is a previous post about the removal of the headunit, I will try and find for you and paste the link

Found the post....

If it is the XT range of RAV4 ,Remove the two metalic looking side covers by using your finger nails (they pull off straight towards you) , carefully ,dont use any tools you will mark the facia, store these until you refit the head unit. Next you will have to remove the heater vent facia that surrounds the radio, you will have to remove the two small self tapping screws that secure the facia in place ,once this is done the facia can be pulled off (straight off ) .Once this is done you will see two bolts on each side of the radio head unit, remove these carefully ,don't allow them to drop or you will have a bugger of a job to get them back , Finally the headunit can be pulled out and disconnected .
