Gearbox Guzzler

Bought my 1998 Rav4 recently. Have no idea of its oil change history. Thinking about changing the gear oil to be on the safe side. Looking at the transmission there is obviously a rear diff, a biggish gearbox and what looks like a front diff. Does the gearbox really hold 5 litres of oil like it says in my handbook? Is the front 'diff' fed oil from the gearbox, as I can see only a drain plug and no filler? Anybody recommend the right oil spec? Thanks.
