When Can I Thrash It?

Hi all,

I really need some advice which Toyota UK have been unable to provide. I will be taking delivery of a T-sport compressor in 3 weeks time as a replacement for my fairly tired Avensis D4D and I want to know how long I need to run it in for before I can safely get into lift mode. They usually tell you to keep it below 4000rpm for a bit but as the lift doesn't kick in until 6200 is it safe to hit lift mode revs on a brand new engine?

It is a company car so not really too bothered if the engine falls out on the first day through overuse but some technical advice would be welcome.

first day i got mine and thrashed it untill it was hitting the limiter in 6th at 150mph on the road angle and it was of the clock. (in a sutable place i.e old air field)

mind you it did have 4.5k on the clock ex demo but that means nothink

goes like a !Removed! rocket.

Thanks guys. I'm really looking forward to it now! I was a bit suprised to see it on my car list, I don't think my fleet manager has any idea what it is I have ordered.

Apparently I should be in an Avensis spirit but when I asked for something a bit smaller he said "well get a Corolla then". Just doing what I was told!

How the hell did the Compressor ended up in your fleet list? Haha, well done for spotting it!

Yes, by the way the compressor does not have the "Lift" any more (back to using the 1794cc engine)... not many salesmen in show rooms knows this, not until i test drove it and felt nothing...

Still, it goes like stink and the torque is so much better, enjoy it matey.

Just to reiterate; the TTE Compressor does have lift, however it comes in at around 4,500rpm.

Umm.

Actually, the lift comes in at the same point as the standard t-sport (exactly the same engine). The reason you do not feel it is due to to the supercharger/compressor. The compressor provides the extra bit of torque required lower in the rev range therefore nullifying the physical sensation of the lift at 6200 rpm. It's still there you just don't notice it as much...listen to the tone of the engine while booting it past 6200...you'll hear it change into the lift range.

Cheers.

The lift certainly does happen at 6200, you just dont feel it as the power is alredy there form supercharger. the lift just takes over from superchargers last gasp. which is why you dont feel a step like on older Tsoprt.

The CTS manual says 1200 miles at between 2000 and 4000rpm for running in. Probably get some similar advice in the Compressor docs.

TBH with modern engines I personally don't think there is any need to bed in the engine with modern technology.

I would drive the car as you mean to go on from day one. It has been argued in the past that using the engine as it should be driven will produce the xtra heat to confirm the seals on the engine....

I normally tell customers who buy from me that there are two arguments, one to take it steady the other to drive like normal, personal drive like normal wins every day of the week...

each to their own i guess...

From what i can remember from my compressor the lift was much lower than the normal CTS. Maximum output achieved through the supercharger is 4k and from then on you can thrape it to redline at 8k which is why its so fast. The engines limits power until the Supercharger is warmed up which is a very wierd feeling it feels like a damm disel thats lost power ;)

I can't believe they have given you a limited edition toyota (the fastest current toyota production car) as a fleet car, the petrol costs will be massive for you and it can only take Optimax or alternatives. Thats expensive on the motorways if that is what you do.

With regards to running in engines... personally if its a fleet car who cares it aint yours. But it is always best to run them in so it gives the engine enough time to build up a barrier of oil protection around the piston rings or whatever up to maximum rev's. They bench and run the engines pre-shipping but it is best to run them in for about 500 miles gently and then increase the rev's slightly for the next 500 then you should be bedded in and ready to thrash.

You've got it lucky, i bought my Compressor when they came out and drove it through the winter and sold it recently. The power on the chasis was too much and i had no grip through the winter months. Now summer is here and the roads are dry it would be lots of fun. Good luck.

When i got my Roadster i was told that there isn't a "Run in" period, i was told not to take it over 80mph for the 1st 500 miles.. then after about a month when the engine loosens off a bit, it would be a fast car.. he was right, the wee Roadster always wants to go.
