Piston Rings Shot

Just had my 2000 Gen 7 (140) serviced and my worst fears have been confirmed. The piston rings are shot. :(

Anyone had any experience with getting them replaced, especially cost. I have been quoted around £700 so I just need to know if this seems excessive or not.

Thanks

There is a hundred issues here

Are you sure they are actually shot, what was the test carried out, do you trust em?

What problems are you getting with the car

Time to sell and buy a new one me thinks, trade in or something?

As per martin said, what are the syptoms?

Can be one of many problems, but with out knowing what problems you have had with your car, its hard to say.

I got f**ked over with my old car, was told piston rings had gone, The oil ring one, as i was getting throught quite alot of oil each month. Cost me shy of £800 for bottom rebuild :crybaby: , later to find all they did was clean the oil breather pipes out, nowt wrong with the rings at all

This was before i had a clue about cars, Scruffs :ffs:

Good Luck in sorting it out mate

I'm getting through a lot of oil (around a litre every 5-600 miles) smoke is becoming visible from the rear and when the plugs were removed they were caked in crap.

No reason to distrust the garage as I've known the people there for quite a while and they have a very good rep.

Anyway I have bitten the bullet and booked it in. A trade in ain't worth the bother as I will only end up spending an extra 3-4k on something I don't like as much.

Here's hoping my woes will soon be over

Yep ok sounds like you are certainly burning oil, good luck with it. Is that the cost for just rings or does this include new shells for the crank. You will be replacing the oil seals too, yes? Crank, camshaftetc?

If you engine looks like mine you would be well placed to change the core plugs when the engine is out. I noticed a right dodgey looking one the other day. they are not expensive and simple to change when the block is out the car

Hi I had an MG B Gt that had similar problem, drinking lots of oil and lots of blue smoke went down the road of replacing piston rings, reground valves etc, still had problem and as mentioned earlier turned out to be blocked oil breather. This must be an easier cheaper test. If it solves it then great if not carry on with rings etc.

On mine its in the rocker cover. There`s a pipe that comes out on the RH side of the rocker cover. You can just see the pipe where it exits below the dump valve.

Probably different on yours. So don`t shout at me. :D
