Supra Mk3 Power Steering Problem!

hi, I wonder if anyone can help, i have a 1990 3.00 turbo and the power steering has packed up. through the advice of toyota i bought and replace the power steering pump. Only to find this didnt solve the problem. Once fitted the steering was placed on full lock and the car left running to remove any air. The steering begain to work fine then got noisy then went heavy, throwing fluid out of its top up. Once again i went back to toyota concerned that it might be the rack. they said due to the fact the steering worked fine for a little while and that the rack didnt show any signs of leaking that this was unlikley. they suggested changing the valve on the back of the steering pump which has two vacume pipes coming from it. i did that but same problem though no noise this time just no assistance on the steering. fluid is constantly over flowing the top, up once the engine is turned off the top up is almost empty. there seems to be another valve with wires going to it where the steering wheel joins the rack, could this be a cause if faulty? or to i have to relent and change the rack. any ideas?

thanks,

nik

Are you sure the lines going to the pump aren't the wrong way round?????

Have you checked for blockages?

What fluid are you using????

hi ye the lines seem fine, the position denotes there placement pretty much. the fluid is toyota's preferred. I cleaned the top up out and flushed the system through. I seem to have good pressure from the return pipe, im starting to think its the control valve on the shaft just returning the fluid back. But i dont know whether this would cause the over flow? is there any other parts to the steering system that would cause such failures?

thanks for your reply

Sorry to but in  but these are the bits I did

I had some probs with my PS recently but not to the same extent as you,( but I started to get heavy streering noisey pump oil overflowing etc) I changed the oil as it was black  , also cleaned out the fine mesh filter that is in the bottom of the res  filled her up with nice new oil and bleed the system on "both locks" I found that bleeding takes some time letting her rest with engine off to allow the bubbles to go then doing it again, and again etc I did keep the oil level low to start with (below the cold low mark) then topped up slowly.

I hope that this may help  , have you checked up on TSRM http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/sr/SR_42.html thats were I got the info for my probs.

hi, update on the power steering problem, another steering rack was fitted in the hope that it was the problem, it wasnt, still have the same problem. bleeding the system with engine off, you can feel resistance building on the steering, when u start the engine the pump makes a slight noise and feels like it is beging to work then it stops and fluid is pushed out of the top up at pressure. Could the presure valve in the pump be causing this? it dose seem as if the pump is the cause, but being a new pump i had kind of signed it off as ok. all the pipes have been blown through including the power steering rad, which was by-passed incase was the cause. with the return pipe off steering fluid pumps out at good pressure. at a loss what to try next any suggestions?

New pump, new rack... it can only be the lines......

I still think its odd that it is shooting out the top... it should shoot in the side, causing the fluid to swirl in the resevoir.... that way it doesn't ***** out everywhere and acts like a swirl pot removing excess air at the same time!

hi thanks for help, problem as been found, the new pump had a faulty flow control valve, as it was new it wasnt considerd, removed and cleaned up it is now working. though pump is noisy. it still suffers from the odd hard steerring. but futher bleeding seems to be sorting it.

thanks again. it survives another year..
