Innoperative Horn

Hi,

I have a 2001 Avensis CDX model and last week the horn stopped working when pressing on the steering wheel. The horn itself works (tested by setting off the alarm).

I took it into a Toyota dealership where they did some investigation and traced the fault to a "broken earth multi-plug" behind the steering wheel. (Chargeable as car is not under warranty).

They have said a new steering wheel is required - which will cost £650 + labor!

They can also "try" and fix this, but need the car for two days and have to order a new plug - not guaranteed.

I don't really want to spend that much on a new steering wheel. Is this something fairly simple to fix? The steering wheel has an airbag fitted so don't want to-do anything which might set it off..!

Any help would be most appreciated - or if anyone can recommend a garage where I can get this fixed in south east London.

Thanks

I have fix a few avensis now with the same fault. New steering wheel my ar5e. All that it needs is the air bag removing and the wire cut at the break and a new bit of wire soldering in. To do this the pin conector will need to be removed from the multi plug. Should take about 30mins.

Hi Mate

I have the exact same problem. Has you airbag light come on and the stereo controls on the wheel stopped working as well?

Hi Tea sport,

Do you have any diagrams/pictures of the wires? Also, how easy is it to remove the airbag without it blowing up in my face?!

sorry no pics. To remove the air bag you first need to disconect the Battery. Wait a few mins (aprox 10mins) then remove the 2 torx screws on the side of the wheel. If the wheel has radio controls , they will need to be removed. The screws wont come right out but just far enough to remove the air bag. Once the air bag is out disconect the yellow wire. by first pulling out the black clip in the middle of the conector. Place the air bag on the floor with the top side facing up. The horn wire that is prone to snapping is the wire going into the white multi plug. The wire snaps inside the plastic insulation and cant be see but some times you can feel the break through the insulation. Replace the wire soldering is necessary. Then plug back in the air bag refit to the steering wheel and reconect the Battery last. Try the horn

tea sport - many thanks for the fix - I'll give it a go in the next few days and will let you know how it goes.

funkyg - no airbag light as yet, but have been told this will most likely follow as well as cd controls will also stop working...

Hi,

Finally managed to spend some time this weekend on this and get it fixed..!

Took tea sports advise, and removed the airbag. Found the black wire for the horn had come out of the multi-plug. Soldered a new piece of wire - put airbag back - all working

Cheers,

H.

Balls!

Finally got round to doing this. Removed air bag, although I couldn't disconnect it. The wires to the back of the air bag seem to be soldered in underneath the black and yellow connector instead of being a plug fitting.

Anyway, it would seem that my problem is in the wiring leading to the black connector block behind the steering wheel as it's everything that comes out of this that doesn't work. ie horn, stereo controls and airbag

Does anyone have any experience of replacing/fitting these?

Mike.

  • 5 years later...

Found this thread while trying to work out how to fix the horn and other sterring wheel facia mounted controls...

I got the airbag unit out, and have had a good poke around, but nothing is obviously broken..

I'm beginning to suspect the moving connection that the stereo controls etc multiplug goes into - a black shroud that rotates with the steering wheel.... I assume this could be a right sod to replace...

Anyone know how to do this??
