Aircon & Mpg Question

Hello all, this is probably a stupid question but I was just wondering...

In my 1.0 Yaris GLS (2001) I get 52mpg average whilst driving, which I know is really good, but when I turn Aircon on the car goes very sluggish and the 52mpg average drops to around 32mpg or worse.

I know aircon is meant to reduce MPG by up to 10% which means I would be expecting about 47 or there aboutsm but the 32 is a lot lower, and I dont see why aircon would reduce my milage by 20mpg, I was wondering if there could be a fault with the system.

Just so ya know I got those figures from the same 50 mile trip!

Any help or advice apreciated!

Thanks

Phill

That definately sounds on the extreme side, has the car been serviced recently?

was due its 50k intermediate a while back, but missed it as I was short on money at the time, nearly onto the 60k full one in the next month or 2.

Could that be why? If so whats most likely to be causing it? I'd ask my brother whose a toyota mechanic but he's away on holiday at the moment, and its concerning me!

Many thanks

I'll take a guess at having the aircon on reduces your MPG by 10%, however because your car is now performing slower you are accelerating harder and faster than before reducing your MPG even further.

I say nothing to worry about however get your car serviced

lol, i intend to at the 60,000 now lol.

Do you think that as the engine is small (1.0) thats why when the aircon is on the performance drops and goes incredibly sluggish. As in a 1.8 Renaut Megane there was no difference in having the aircon on.

no service: oil full of crud. air filter full of crud, pollen filter full of crud..

. Put a load on engine and mpg will drop dramatically.

air con will eat power on a smaller engine , bigger engines dont seem to notice.

best bet is to switch air con off on hills ,overtaking or generally when the extra power is needed , keep all windows shut inc sunroof - once the car is cool put it on recirc air,it then uses the already cool air and dont switch on as often , having the windows tinted helps alot also.

I live in a very hilly place, very steep, and with aircon on i was needing 1st gear alot of the time! lol

Thanks again guys!
