St165

After 16 years of waiting, I have just purchased an ST165. An '89 F reg.

Hopefully an incredibly kind person can help me :help:

Usually after a long journey, when approaching standstill in neutral, the engine revs will drop to zero causing the engine to die completely. It seems to have problems staying idle at around 1,000 rpm.

I have increased the tickover speed which has very slightly eased the problem, but hasn't cured it. Again, when I brake hard in neutral the revs either drop to zero (and the engine cuts out) or they drop to around 250 and pull up to near 1000 again.

I don't know if the heat might be a factor??? Any advice would be gratefully accepted as I'm at a complete loss!!!

Andy

Hi WTTC and congratulations on your purchase. The 165 is a fine car. :yes:

You don`t say whether the car has any modifications. Dump valve, Induction kit. So on and so forth.

The problem you describe could, as you are no doubt aware have quite a few causes. It`s really a matter of a process of elimination. You need to consider the following.

1/ Has the car had a service recently? If not then new plugs, leads, dizzy cap, and timing check will negate any likely cause with the ignition. New filters and oil will be needed as well.

2/ Check all vacuum hoses for deteriation. The car is 17 years old and any of the original pipes will be getting frail and brittle and easily susceptible to damage or breakage. Replave any/all if they`re looking dodgy.

3/ Have you attempted to pull any error codes yet? Or tried an ECU reset? If you`ve done all the above and the car is still misbehaving. Then that would be my next move.

Over to you. :yes::thumbsup:

I did neglect to say that the car is totally standard. I have actually got an oil leak from the idle up pipe, just right of the turbo........
