Hello All,

I am wandering if anyone can shed any light on the following :

As I was putting my 1.6 1998 Corolla lift back ( 4A-FE Engine ) back in the garage after a small run, I noticed that the rev counter began to rise and fall up to 700rpm back to 500 rpm , this happened 3-or 4 times rhythmically before I switched off the ignition.

The car has just been tested and the timing belt changed at Toyota around 3 weeks ago.

The car usually idles at 500 rpm bang on and has done so since I bought it .

Any one with any ideas ?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers

Albi

This could be due to the ECM (Engine Control Management)

It will run high from cold due to the auto choke, then fall down as it warms up, so it could start at 1000RPM then fall down to 600RPM.

Also, anything electrical with the car will also have an effect to the idle as well, so if you had air-con, it will run more higher (1200RPM) to run the compressor for it.

The figures i've put up, are from my own car.

If your idle is about 500RPM, don't worry, but if you feel it sputtering for any reason, then perhaps it might need to be turned up slightly to make it idle sound run more smoothly.

Hope that helps.
