hi all, been a while since i used this forum, used to have a ae102 corolla si, gr8 car but have just went and bought gen 6 gt and wow i love it, i seem to have a few problems though:

1. Does anybody have an airbag light that comes on when u turn the ignition on, i have no sign of an airbag light at all although it has an airbag?!

2. is mines a t-vis?? i seem to not have the huge power kick at 5000rpm

3. when givin the car some kick i get about 47mph in 1st, 70mph in 2nd, 105mph in 3rd, is this right?!

its a 94 (m) uk model with 110k on the clock.

apart from these minor problems it is an amazing car to drive a bit juicy though!

any help is greatly appreciated and keep up the good work guys!!

Hi, and welcome back. Congrats on your new car!

I have exactly the same model. It is a pre-facelift which means a few differences from the majority of G6s. ('96-'99) Other than a few more horses, different spoiler and different front bumper/indicator & fog lights the car is the same. Another stupid difference is the indicator stalk is on the wrong side!

If you don't already know, the chassis is ST202 and the engine is the 3rd gen 3S-GE.

I've just checked mine, there is no airbag light on the dash (or at least when you turn the ignition on) I can check the manual if others think this is sus? Not sure what you mean by t-vis? (may be being a bit stupid) but the engine is NOT VVTi or VVTLi which means it has the usual power curve. It generally does not kick out till 4-5k but when it does, it is not sudden like the G7s VVTLi at 6k. Much more gradual, but still plentiful.

Those gear speeds sound similar to mine but I have bottled it about 5-10mph less than you on each. Do you think this is not alot? I couldn't believe it personally!

Anybody correct me if I'm wrong. Still learning...

Ben

I didn't think the pre face lift models had any more power!?!!?! They don't look as good thats for sure from the front. The old spoiler minus the blocks is available on newer cars than mine as I have seen it on a GT 97. Personally the newer 3 footed spoiler makes the car look more modern IMHO. As for the indicator that would really p!$$ me off!

47 in First!??!?!?! Mate, there reliable but you will ruin yours in not too long if you carry on like that!

Yeh, "supposedly" there was a slight modification to the air intake to improve emissions due to tougher regulations. This and maybe a couple more minor tweaks reduced the power by a few bhp. I have noticed mine is lacking a couple of tubes under the bonnet in this region compared to '96-.

I have seen a couple of face-lifts with the old-style spoiler too but was just trying to generalise things a little. I do prefer the facelifted front, looks a bit more neat and modern but I'm not going to hold it against my Celica  She's more than enough for me. As for the spoiler I have to say that I really do not like the 3 pronged one (sorry to those that own them!) but each to their own.

Strangely enough, I prefer the position of the indicator stalk, seems more natural to use them with my right hand. Maybe I'm making lame excuses for my backwards car though!

yeah the first few 3sge engines were slightly up on the newer ones due to emissions i believe .

And as special says 47mph in first will kill the engine quite quickly bud......i would question your speedo a bit too , seems quite quick for first gear

Think your speedo is out bud

dont think a GT should be able to pull 47mph in first!

Didn't think about that. My GPS shows my actual speed is approx. 3-6% lower. 47 is~44mph.

I found a website which says that the GT4 does 35mph in 1st at the redline. A calculation I just did with the gear ratios and tyre size comes up with 33.9mph. (based on 205/55/R15s, GT4 gear ratios and depending on tyre pressure) Therefore 44mph would require 9086RPM.

God, I think this must be what it feels like to have withdrawal symptons from uni! Off to get drunk now to regain some sanity

hey guys, thanks alot for the help its great. i thought it was wishful thinking it could do 47mph in first, i didnt like the standard white needles and i had a spare instrument cluster from the corolla si which has red needles so i changed them over, looks a lot better and everything else seems to work perfectly (fuel, temp tacho). however the speedo when u turn the igniton on used to jump up to 20mph, so i sorted that and thought it was all ok.

Anyways in regards to the T-Vis system i remember reading it in this forum and it stands for Toyota Variable Intake System. Not sure if our models have it or not.

Thanks Again
