Avensis 03+ 1.8 Auto 40mph Whistle?

I notice a fairly faint, but audible (and slightly irritating) high pitched 'electronic' whistle sound if I drive around 40mph.

- any other 1.8 auto owners noticed this?

I took my car in to the Toyota dealer and they weren't sure themselves if this was a 'characteristic' or a problem.

If it wasn't a characteristic they reckoned it could be transmission noise.

To me it sounds like some frequency emission from an electronic component of some sort, but it only happens at around 40mph. So if I drive in a 40mph zone at 40mph it's whistling all the way.

I had a similar whistle but different tone in my VW but that only happened under engine load, was a brief whistle, and went away under constant throttle. My Metro had it too, where sometimes it would give a faint high pitched electronic whistling noise under throttle, the dealers said it was a suppressor of some sort and was a 'characteristic'. The Avensis one differs in that it is prolonged and constant at 40 mph.

Pretty sure, since the whistle noise is 'electronic' sounding, I guess it could be described as a very high frequency hum too. - but only happens at 40mph (need to turn the stereo off to hear it properly)

Sounds a bit like the old manual knob MW/LW radios when you are searching for stations, and there is a very high frequency hum/whistle (interference) when you are trying to tune a station
