Purchase Advice

Hi everyone.

Just been to look at a GT4, and its got a few issues. Fig8 and shock need replacing, and theres a reasonable oil leak behind the engine (gearbox?)

Are these things that are solvable with some money off (little concerned not knowing what the oil leak is though) or should I just be walking away?

Thanks for any advice,

Stu

Take it from one who`s learnt the hard way. Walk away.

There`s a lot of good cars out there for reasonable money.

Unfortunately there are even more bad cars for the same sort of money.

a car that's been allowed to get to that state isnt worth the bother mate , look elsewhere untill you find a minter, with a gen 6 gt4 do not settle for anything other than perfection, these motors are high performance cars and MUST be maintained to a very high standard - just to get the jobs done you mention would set you back in excess of somewhere near a grand.

Yeah, I have a little voice telling me thats probably the right thing.

Its just frustrating, these cars just dont seem to come up that frequently :(

Ok guys,

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to leg it on this one. I think its probably worth me reaching deeper into my pockets for something decent.

I read in one post that fresh imports should be avoided, is that still general consensus? Being offered a 12 month warranty on a fresh import elsewhere....

my import never let me down , it needed 1 fig 8 and lower arm in 2 years. nothing more

with 12 months warrenty i'd certainly buy import , it will be cleaner and should be less mileage.

Try the for sale section on www.gt4oc.com cos there's a good few on there. I'm in the same boat as yourself, looking to purchase a GT4. Just hope I get a good one.

I'm looking at one with around 80k miles, that isn't high mileage for a 4 is it? When should the cam belt be replaced?

Mine has approx 85k miles, runs like new ;)

Cam-belt, i'd do one once you buy one, unless your certain its had one done, normally 60k IIRC

Be very careful what your warranty actually covers, I've recently had a customer who had a 12 month warranty but when i read the small print she could only claim £100 in the warranty in total, that would hardly cover labour for a reasonable job !

OK cool. How much would a garage charge me to change cam belt? £200-300(ish)? ;)

Cambelt and tensioner should be less than £200 all in.

80K is childs play to these engines if they've been looked after, bought mine with 80K had 100K when it met its sticky end and was still running sweet as!

OK, bit the bullet and went for the other fresh import. Looks and drives _very_ tasty. Pics when I pick it up (they're doing a service and the cambelt, but its going to be an agonising week wait for delivery :( )

Not too sure about the spoiler blocks though...

smithy at nottingham charges £175.00 Parts & Labour

and changes all aux belts in the process, this guy is a gt4 guru and knows more than anyone out there. no need to change the tensioners really , unless they are sticking or noisy , they are the steel type and dont mess up . timing the gt4 after a cam belt requires you to cross 2 pins in the diagnostics box too, if not done the timing will always be out and affect turbo performance also, so make sure where you take it knows this.
