I don't notice it on idle, but have seen mine 'jump' up a little when cruising on the motorway.

Always wondered what caused it.

It's supposed to signal a car with high mileages (at least the car buying guides say watch out for irregular idle).

Having said that my car does it and it 'only' has 49k, and my Pug 205 did it too.

The only possibility I can think of is when the alternator kicks in to top up the Battery.

So with that in mind, how good is your Battery and what electrical equipment is turned on ie radio, lights etc?

The Battery condition would be something to consider...... or it could be the alternator over compensating......

Other than that, it could be the ecu giving and/or recieving false readings

Good suggestions...

The Battery is brand new, normally the car radio is on and that's it really.

The alternator and ecu are both plausible. I do remember letting my dealer inspect the problem, and they came back and said everything is fine.

I do have to mention again it hardly ever happens.

  • 1 year later...

I have an R reg 1.8gs avensis estate - where should the needle settle on idle ? mine settles 2 notches from 1000 revs. I bought it recently and wanted to make sure it's not idling too high as petrol consumption seems high. I put in £20 and get approx 125 miles out of it. Is this normal ?

If you are having problems with the rev meter going up randomly and the engine revs not going up..

problem is Nothing to do with cluster,...

I would look more at a speed sensor..
