Advice On Restoring An Ae86

Well, as I predicted, the description of my car wasn't all true on eBay, but I ended up buying on other people's word on Driftworks and got burnt! I honoured my eBay purchase so to speak... Anyway, you live and learn and I don't want to go into right now really - I'll have my rant another time... :censor: Saying that, I got the car at a price that allows me to do some work to it.

I now intend to take it home to Ireland, strip it down and fix everything properly, instead of hiding problems, then bring it back to the UK when it's done! The engine and running gear won't be a problem as my cousin (thinks he) is a Toyota specialist in his spare time! I'm sure I will ask for power advice in the near future...

What I need to know now is where I can get a replacement rear passanger side arch and/or inner arch and 'pocket' as there is a disgusting array of filler and chicken wire in use at present!!! Secondly, can the window and door rubbers still be bought new from Toyota (I haven't got part numbers to check!). Thirdly, is it a bad thing if I have to patch weld four or five small areas, with one chassis leg already shoddily welded?

Lastly, should I bother!!!???

Thanks from a disgruntled eBayer!

I have someone in line to do the welding/fabrication and a Toyota bodyshop employee to do the paint - yippee! :D I'm just enjoying driving it at the moment as it's a really tight drive! And the rear tyres are brutal so it makes for easy sideways action! :D

if is me and the car is not as describe i wouldn't purchase i mean what is the worst a eBay seller can do give me negative feedback and would this negative feedback affect the rest of my life i dont think so:D, with car's as old as ae82 you need expert to check it out before you you buy and not being funny or anything but if is drifting you want to play with isn't the s14 Silvia (manual ) better choice of a car? they are know as king of all dift car in east asia and i seen the japanese drift king drive one on video it was awesome and on that video he highly recommended the s14 anyway goodluck with your new project

Bugger man what a :censor: head the person is who sold it. I suggest you pan them on driftworks also as I think they are a seller on there. Best to let eveyone know the guy's a :ffs:

You can get most of the parts you need in ireland there are some places that are making fabricating parts for the 86 over there as the irish keep denting them

Yeah he's an a**e, and I did slate him and the way he advertises his cars as "rot and rust free" and also posted pics of all the areas affected, but a moderator from DriftWorks PM'd me and took the post down as he said I cannot post negative comments about one of their sellers! I responded outlining the reasons why I had a right to do it and that it was purely to prevent other people from being stung, but no joy. I will keep emailing people bidding on his cars on eBay though (as I've done already to one very grateful person). So I've now contacted eBay as he is advertising two more "rot and rust free" AE86s which he said are nowhere near as tidy as mine! What a clown-d**k!!! Might consider the Trading Standards too...

After all that though, the car drives great and should be worth the effort - I've always wanted a project! :D

I still bought it because I had the mother of all bad days and after getting a parking fine in London, missing two trains, my train then being delayed, paying £84 for the ticket and it ****** down rain in Leeds (and I had no jacket) I wasn't about to turn back then!!!

At the end of the day, if a car is advertised on a "secure" site like eBay with registered users signed up to an agreement, you should be able to drive home and look under/around the car and find it as described. It's what they call TRUST, but as I've learned (and heard from other people), certain traders in 'West Yorkshire' cannot be trusted. Please don't anyone get offended by that - I'm not tarring everyone from there with the same brush... just those certain traders... but anyway trust doesn't exist in this day and age! :(

Oh... and where'd you read that the S13/4 is the drift king! The AE86 is a car I always wanted and now I have an opportunity to do so. They're also ideal to learn in and are very predictable!

For some reason eBay has become a bad place with regards Vehicles and Vehicle related items (was even an article on BBC Watchdog about it last year).

Allegedly ;)

I didn't have any problems before this with eBay as far as item being as described is concerned, but I agree, it's become a trading ground for dodgy dealers, where the value for money has also disappeared...

its very rare to find an ae86 without car cancer underneath, but yours sounds like a fairly botched job!!. i suppose the ideal thing is a bare Shell restoration(if ya can afford it). it might be worth it seeing as theres a couple of mint cams in the irish autotrader at the moment, advertised at 15 grand.whether or not they will sell for that is another question, but still, i dont think youd make a loss on it. theyre going for crazy money.

a mate of mine sold a rotten one for 5 and a half grand the other day

Well after a few nice bits of tail-out action this evening I'm smiling again. On my way to Ireland tonight and when I get it over th pit and cost it up, I'll decide... The thing is, after all my giving out about getting sold a car "not as described", I'd feel guilty about shifting mine onto an innocent victim!

Will PM ya in a bit... Cheers Johnny! I'm getting two new rear arches from that Dan Turner guy on irishcoupes.com and that's all I need hopefully! I stripped everything down at the rear and it's actually all good except the arches. The only reason the pocket appears rotten is 'cos the seam on the arch is rotten.

So I'm alot happier now! It's a good enough project to start on - I'm gonna get everything welded that needs welding (with photo history for the next owner if I ever sell it!), tidy up any of the bits I removed, do some minor engine work and then a full respray in red before I put it all back together  I'm not going to bother with the red over black scheme again 'cos I have something in mind... but you get the idea in the next pic!

Oh, and there's some pics of the initial 'stripping down' to follow...

Was that first part of your post directed at me? It's MY first AE86, but not the first in my family hence why I have lots of help in getting it back to top condition... B)
