98 Rav4 Alarm...new Fobs And Ecu Location?

Recommended Posts

Posted

My girlfriend has just bought a 98 Rav4 but there are no alarm fobs.

I've read about reprogramming the fob by discharging it, rebuilding and pressing the lock button

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42141

Will this work with new fobs as well? Seems it will, but can someone confirm the ecu doesn't need to be reset even with a fob that hasn't been used with the car before?

If an ECU reset is required where is it?

Cheers,

Carl

The ecu is behind the plastic trim next to the drivers foot rest. Remove the trim and it should be tie wraped to a metal bracket. To program in the fobs turn the ignition on 1st click and push the green button in on the ecu till the alarm led lights up. press and hold both the buttons on the fob till the led goes out. to program in more than one you will need to repress the green button. The button may be hidden under a metal cover simply remove it if need be.

Just to be awkward, i'm sure on my 98 model it was behind the glove box. However the glovebox is easy to remove, just pull out the hinge pins, and manouver it out.

If the fobs have 2 black buttons the ecu is by the foot rest.

if the fob has 1 red and 1 black button (older type of alarm) the ecu is behind the glove box.

If it is the older type i dont know if you can program in new fobs.

I am sure someone on the fourm will know.

May I intrude on this thread, please, as someone might be able to help.

Suddenly today the remote locking on our RAV4 ceased to function, but only the locking part! When we push the unlock button on the fob the usual mechanical sounds emanate from all doors as if the locks are being released and if we manually lock all doors the fob does indeed unlock them. However, when I press the lock button absolutely nothing happens except the red light on the fob illuminates as usual.

I am thoroughly familiar with the re-setting procedure for the sytem and have tried this several times without success.

The only thing I have done has been to remove the panel below the steering wheel to tighten up the cigarette lighter. I touched no electrical plugs or other connections or devices.

Can some please offer any suggestions before I get a massive bill from my local garage?? Eg Where is the sensor located which receives the signal? Is there a chance I may have dislofged a connection whilst messing with the cigarette lighter?

Thanks.

I was going to write this all up with some pictures, but for now I'll say exactly the same thing happened to me...It took me two hours to work out the rear door was slightly open (door was proud about 1mm, but enough to trigger the sensor), which prevent the remote locking from operating. I couldn't see the red light on the dash from outside the car because of the sunlight and tinted windows. Make sure all the doors and windws are shut; I suspect the alarm won't set/ doors won't lock if there is something tripping the sensors...

Thanks JollyG. I've been through checking all doors many times over but still nothing... How does the system sense that the doors are closed; I couldn't find switches when I looked yesterday?

Edited minutes later... The bonnet!! The damned bonnet!! I just checked and it open by about a millimetre. All's well now. Very many thanks JollyG....
