Cruise Control For 2001 Avensis Gs

Hi,

I have a 2001 Avensis 2.0vvti. I do a lot of miles(30,000 per year) and have recently started getting a pain in my accelerator foot after 50 miles or so. I've never had this with any of my other cars so assuming it must be the position of the pedal on the avensis or something. I even 'adjusted' the pedal spring to make it lighter but that didn't make a difference either.

My next idea is to try and fit cruise control.

Has anyone done this who could point me in the right direction?

I know the car is drive-by-wire, I have checked so surely it can't be too difficult.

Is the wiring already in place as with the stereo/sat nav in boot option?

Do I just need to get a set of controls from a scrappy and plug them in or is there any control boxes/etc needed?

I can't afford to spend a lot so the £400+ aftermarket ones are out of the question.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you

I know what you mean, I used to get quite a bit of cramp with my Avensis so I think it must be the accelerator position.

Anyway I think the aftermarket route would be easiest as I don't think any of the old Avensis ever came with Cruise Control, which seemed an odd omission to me since cars like the old shape Honda Accord came with it standard on every model except the base as does the new Vectra etc.

It might be worth enquiring with Toyota first if it's possible to retro fit it as the Toyota 'joystick' is one of the easiest systems to use and is a more elegant solution than the aftermarket versions.

I'm not overly sure how well the car will cope with though after driving a Pontiac Vibe last year which has a Toyota VVTi engine. Driving it with the Cruise Control on didnt really seem to suit the engine due their high-revving nature, it always felt strained when going up hills and didnt seem very good at keeping it's speed when going down hill's compared to older non VVTi Toyota's with cruise.

Hi James,

I know that cruise control was availabe on some 2001 avensis' as when I bought mine I looked at a couple of others first of the same age. One was a GLS model and had toyota cruise control as standard. I think it was on the steering wheel opposite the audio controls if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure about going down hilld but my engine seems to have tonnes of power, even for climbing hiss so I can't see it struggling.

I will attempt to 'extract' some info from my local toyota dealer but I have faound them rather unhelpful in the past unless the can see the £-signs coming there way.

Thanks

Hi folks

I was at my toyota dealer about a month ago asking about fitting cruise control on my 02-avensis. It is not possible to install it afterwards according to my dealer. I also asked for a towbar and that would work be fine for about 400£.

400 pound to fit a towbar is ridiculous!!!! i fitted one to my 2000 d4d sr saloon and it cost about 100 quid for the bar and relay kit off eBay (all brand new) and then a few hours to fit using basic tools.

They told me that it wasn't possible either. Apparently there are no parts listed for this on the database.

I'm pretty sure it must be possible though. Surely the GLS has exactly the same ecu as the GS so it can't be that difficult.

I know there are toyota mechanics etc on here, so there must be someone out there that can help....please!

Thanks

Dale

  • 8 months later...

I have a 06-avensis 1.8 with a Rostra aftermarket cruise control installed by the local dealer. It has been replaced once an adjusted several times. It's still not able to adjust my speed properly when I press ACC or COAST. Too much speed then too little then too much..... very annoying.

I like to have an original Toyota cruise control fitted. The cost is not a major issue. The dealer might take the cost if I can tell them that there is no problem with putting in an original Toyota cruise control.

So how hard can it be? This should be possible?

Anybody here who knows for sure?
