Has anyone else experienced this:

OK so normally the petrol pumps have that cutoff feature where the petrol stops pouring when the level reaches the nozzle (at least I'm sure that's how it works), however everywhere I've been, this cutoff seems to happen to me all the time. The only alternative's I have is to either squeeze gently on the trigger which results in a very slow flow, no fun if you want to fill the thing, or have the nozzle about a third of the way in, which worries me that the cutoff won't work for it's original intent, that is to toggle if the level gets too high, resulting in me possibly being caked in petrol, and I'm a smoker..... :help:

The answer to this one is easy.....................

Give up smoking ;) :D Oh...welcome to TOC

hehehe....that exact thing happened to me. Couldn't smoke for a whole day

Why do people have to mention smoke ? Was asked yesterday you still off the smokes? They just got an angry look back :!Removed!: :crybaby:

All very well and good, but I was asking about the cutoff issue! Any suggestions?

It'll never get to the point where I overfill the tank, I barely get it up to full bars on the fuel gauge just by under guessing how much to put in.

I have had that problem at a few petrol stations too,

I usually find that if you turn the fuel nozzle 90 degrees or start filling slowly and build up the speed it usually works in the end

I had never had this problem until i filled up at Sainsbury's last week and the pump must have clicked of at least 10 to 15 times. I under-filled the car on purpose to prevent over-filling.

Same happed about 1/2 an hour ago at an Esso, but this time i got petrol all down the side of the car and my shoes. :censor: Looking into the tank nozzle, there was petrol right up to the brim.

I drove home, only about 1 mile and had another look, and the level of petrol has gone right down, I can no longer see petrol. Where has it gone? I can't have used that much in a mile of driving.

I've just washed the side of the car though as I'm a little worried that the petrol could eat the paint?

tried filling it up slowly, it just clicks off, might try the 90 degree thing. But what happened to Jazzy Jase is what I fear!!

It depends which pump you go to.... like at the local Shell it'll click if you squeeze the handle too tight and you can only squeeze it so much... as in it'll only let so much fuel in at a time...

Some pumps, such as my local Tescos dont have this feature and it'll only click towards the end of the tank, in which case the closer the clicks the closer the tank is to being full....

If you watch the fuel going in and if you see any coming out, you can stop before it spurts all over you....

And if that happens, dont smoke, otherwise the phrase 'human torch' will have a whole new meaning!

Hope this helps, just what I have noticed filling up the Yaris.

PS Stop smoking!

Ryan here....

I thought there was part of the new Drivings Lessons that meant you had to know some basics about lookingafter your car, if not common sense is normally a good indicator when filling up with petrol. [Edited and greatly abbreviated by Em]

I think this problem is worse if you let the fuel level drop right down before you refill. If you refuel when there is still a quarter of a tank left it may be easier.

Hasn't happened to me yet as it always clicks ...... my hands just get coated in diesel from the previous muppet :ffs:

Often wonder how the click system works?

Is it pressure or something in the tank?

Please enlighten me :D

Basically it's air pressure.... in the end of the nozzle there is two pipes.. the main delivery pipe and a smaller air pipe.

When you pull the trigger the fuel will flow until either you let go of it or the smaller pipe is blocked...usually by the fuel.. the change in air pressure triggers the nozzle to cut off.

If your having trouble filling your car it is because the fuel is being delivered to fast and splashing against the sides and covering the smaller air pipe causing the trigger to click off.

Always wanted to know how it worked

that could be true, never thought of that. Filled it up today from almost empty and didn't have a problem. And I've used that forecourt before.....weird....

Was someone using the pump on the other side as this will cut down the delivery rate.

I never thought about that. It is interesting how the problem can happen at some garages, but not others. I usually fill up at Tesco, and their pumps always click off at the correct time. I wonder how many different manufacturers of petrol pumps there are and whether they all use the same system for shutting-off.

Can't remember but I'm pretty certain they we're, it was busy at that time. I suppose after a few more fills I might get used to how it all works, but being so fuel efficient it doesn't happen too often!

I have to admit that I cheat a bit. Most of the time I run my tank near empty before refilling and I also know that my tank takes about 42 litres.

When the volume of diesel that's gone in reaches about 38 or 39 litres I just perch the pump on the edge of the filler and do the rest slowly by eye. Wen it reaches about an Inch below the rim I say its full and then don't have to do it for another 500 miles :D

Oh and Dave, most filling stations have cruddy plastic gloves that you can use to keep the diesel off your hands - in case they don't then I keep a pair of gloves in the boot just in case

Went to my usual Tesco to fill up today. 93.9p per litre incidentally, it's a sad day when i think that is cheap!

Put the pump in, slowly pulled the trigger, click. No not again, adjust fuel pump, pull trigger, click. Aaaaargh. :ffs:

Remember reading on this forum about turning the pump, so rotated the pump anti-clockwise about 60 degrees, pul trigger, petrol flows, pull harder, petrol flows faster, result! :)

Pump didn't click off again until the tank was full. No spilled petrol and no wet shoes. So it looks like turning the pump is the "fix".

Incidentally I got 55 mpg from that last tank, which is my best yet, I think the engine must be getting more efficient as it loosens up.

I find some pumps in Sainsbury's by far the worst :ffs:

I'll have to remember the trick about turning the nozzle, didn't know that. I found with the Yaris that the fuel consumption did rise as it got more miles on the clock too.

Posted

I usually turn the fuel nozzle about 90/110 degrees to the right and force it a bit to the right too.. that way, the fuel passes without the cutoff issue.

humm i never thought it was actually a problem it always used to happen to me when i first got the car (the pump clicking off i mean)

i just thought it was me not doing it right but from looking at this i looked at how i use the pump and i just put pressure on the whole on the handle gently for like the first quid then press it firmly down and it hasnt clicked in months..

dunno if that will help, :)

of yea i always press down on the top too so that the pump is high up in the tank.

Actually, worst of all it trying to fill with diesel from a high-volume truck pump. The nozzle doesn't actually fit into the hole so you kind of have to perch it one the side of the filler and dribble it in.

I can't complain though - I get those fills for free!
