Engine Differences

I have read a few posts where people have adivsed to go for the 3S-GE engine over the 3S-FE. It's too late for me now as I didn't know about this before and after reading these posts, I have looked under my bonnet and been dissapointed top find that mines a 3S-FE.

In truth I dont know why I'm disapointed cos I don't know what the difference is. Can anyone explain the differences to me?

i liked the 3sfe feel , its not lazy like the 3sge is at certain rev ranges , then again the celica gear ratios stink .

Is there major differences in the engine or can the ECU just be re-mapped.

its all in the cylinder head afaik

also afaik the pistons in the 3sfe are lighter so it produces slightly more of a tourque feel about it.

Ive a 3s-fe too, not the quickest of the bunch but feels ok, trouble free engine generally.

My water pump did start to rumble and cost me all of 27 quid to replace so I changed the timing belt too and the job was a sinch!

Sounds good to me, dont really feel the car should be faster, I am happy with it, the nicest old motor I've ever had

I recently bought a Carina Executive with the 3sfe engine. Before purchase, I was looking for a Carina GTi with the 3sge engine but found them difficult to locate.

Anyway, since then I've been reading up on the differences, and now I'm quite happy with my choice.

As mentioned before, the 3sfe has lighter components and Toyota designed it to deliver torque at low-mid range. The 3sge engine IS more powerful and has more torque, but you have to be revving it higher to get the best out of it (and using more fuel). So, let's face it, how often are you driving round the burbs like that?

I'm happy because for normal/brisk driving the car performs admirably and changing up around 4,500-5,000 seems to keep it in the torque band nicely without screaming it's guts out.

OTOH, changing up at 6,500 with my V12 Daimler IS fun...
