Speedo Errors

Has anyone got any experience of errors on speedo readings on their T Sport's?

My 05 version seems to over-read badly. First noticed it when I seemed to be holding up traffic in a 40 MPH zone, although the speedo was showing 45. Checked it against one of those radar 'your speed is' displays, for that to show 30, the speedo shows 37. The same display shows 30 when I go past at an indicated 32 in my Golf.

Mentioned it at it's first service, Toyota garage checked it, said it over read by 4 MPH and wanted it in for further investigation. After that, they said they had contacted Toyota Technical who suggested checking against GPS, this gave error of between plus 5 and 10 MPH. I believe the maximum error for speedos is +10%, and clearly mine seems outside this

Two questions: Anyone else heard of or suffered this, and how do I convince Toyota that there is a problem?

In these speed checked days, having no confidence in the speedo is not a good idea!

It's common knowledge that all OEM speedo's overread for security/safety reasons. It being that far out isn't an acceptable tolerance. Just keep hacking away at them!

I always find that when i'm driving at exactly the speed limit everyone in front is going faster and you seem to be holding everyone up behind you, but i'm glad you go a slower speed than what's on the speedo as it saved me from a few points a few months ago.

I have TomTom which tells me my speed by GPS.

It's meant to be quite accurate, but theres always about 1 / 2 seconds delay

but holding my speedo with the needle just touching the very left of the 4, of 40 is 30mph.

I also drove with the needle in the same place past one of those things that flash your speed at you and TomTom & it agreed that I was doing the same speed, so TomTom seems fairly accurate - I trust it when going past cameras more than the car's speedo :)

I have no 'endorsements' on my license yet :)

maybe.

but as I said in my above post, it agreed perfectly with the flashy speed warning sign I drove past

90% of those signs flash at you no matter what you're speed. Then 5% at +20mph and the last 5% at 30mph. (or the speed limit)

There's a sign on Leeds inner ring road, coming from the North-east just into the centre that says:

'Your Speed is:'

And flashes your speed at you... it's great fun tyring to get the highest speed possible!

  • 1 month later...

Well, thanks for the info all.

6 weeks into arguments with the dealer and Toyota, and all I get is 'yes it is out but they all are sir!' Not acceptable in my book, so taking police advice next. To show nearly 40 when doing 30 is just plain wrong!

Perhaps Toyota will take note of a police validated statement of the speedo errors?

I'll keep you informed!
