Corolla V Yaris Comparison

Hello

I've just had a Yaris on a 2-day test drive and was quite impressed but still have a couple of doubts in the back of my mind. I'm wondering if the Yaris would be too small for me, as I have a big car at the moment, and if the Corolla would be more suitable.

Can anyone here confirm the size of the boot in the Corolla hatchback? The brochure says that it is 289 litres, but that's only 17 litres more than the Yaris but it looks a LOT bigger. I wonder if there's a mistake in the brochure?

Also, I was planning to get a 1.4 D-4D Yaris. Is it exactly the same engine in the 1.4 D-4D Corolla? If so, is it underpowered in the bigger car?

One last question - the Yaris seemed quite "bouncy" on some road surfaces; it really felt the bumps and I did feel a little bit sick at first! Is the ride quality better in the Corolla?

I reckon I need to take a Corolla out on a test drive but wondered if any of you had any opinions.

Thanks

Judith

Hello there and welcome to the club  !

I moved from the Yaris to the Corolla 3 months back ;)

First of all though are you talking about the new shaped yaris or the old one? I'll take a guess that your talking about the new one as it has a boot :P !

I haven't driven the old shape diesel yaris but I have driven the new one about two weeks ago when my Corolla had to go in to have some work done to it.

TBH it wasn't that bad - they both have the same problem of soft suspension/body roll when you turn tight into a corner which is annoying (the yaris being the worst), but that's about it.

Before I got my 2l diesel I test drove the 1.4l Corolla and maybe it was my imagination but the Corolla felt quicker/more powerful that the 1.4l yaris  ! Even though I'm sure it's the same engine ?!?! Maybe it was the noise? But then again the yaris only had a few 1k's on the clock which counts.

I can't really comment on space apart from my old yaris didn't really have any, but it's great to have 5 doors and a big boot  !

Another thing I can talk about it equipment - The Corolla is miles ahead and also in quality as the yaris is really plasticity IMHO. The Corolla also has those extra little features that the yaris doesn't such as a foot/arm rest etc.

So that's about it really  !

One thing I would say/found out is that it was better off for me to buy the 2l rather than the 1.4l as the 1.4l was alot harder to find and the spec levels were generally lower than the 2l. So that made the price difference even closer, but the difference in power is :drool: and the difference in insurance between the two different engine sizes was nothing either  !

But at the end of the day it's your car and you decide what to buy, not what somebody says on the Internet ;) ! But I say take a test drive in the Corolla but not just the 1.4l

Thanks, Dave.

Yes, I was talking about the new Yaris. The one that's on every billboard at the moment!

I don't think Toyota do a two-day test drive on the Corolla, which is a shame, but I'm sure I'll get a feel for how different it is to the Yaris. I'm trying to keep my motoring costs down - so a 1.4 is more attractive thana 2litre....... but I want an engine that'll do the business.

Thanks for your reply.

Hello again .... about getting a two day test drive in the Corolla just ask and they should do it for you- after all you do want to make sure that you want to get the right car, and i'm sure there after your business. Toyota dealers are normally pretty good  !

Where in the UK are you?

My 2L is very good getting around 500 miles for £40-ish, not sure on what you would get in the 1.4l maybe someone else can say? I can't remember what my road tax is (£130 maybe? -I'll update later). Insurance group maybe the same? (again i'll check and put it up later!)

Like I said, I had my heart on a 1.4l but somehow I ended up with the 2l ;)

But if you are doing alot of motorway work I would recomend the 2l - okay it's no Audi or BMW but it has more than enough power to keep up with them ;)

Again at the end of the day it's your choice ...... atleast your buying a Toyota ;)

[Edit - pop into the yaris section as i'm sure there's a few new yaris diesel owners. They will be able to help you more on the yaris side of things (balanced view etc :P )

Hi I have had a 1.4 D MMT Corolla for 18months now and it has averaged 52.4mpg. It certainly does not feel undepowered and is a revelation on hills compared to my previous 1.9D Citroen. No problems at all and a very comfortable car.

in my opinion i would go for the corolla, it feels alot more comfortable and you do get better equipment

as far as the boot goes, the new yaris is much better than the old one, but it still isnt as deep as the corolla, so if you are likely to be putting bulkier items in it the corolla wins

i totally agree with dave though, it is your car, so you really need to test drive all options, and consider it carefully, cause you have to live with which ever you chose, so just take your time

also if theres a specific reason why you are concerned about the boot space (ie a push chair or golf clubs) ask the dealer if you can bring them along to see how they fit, it cant hurt to ask, i saw wheels on deals once where a man took his boot and trailer to go and look at a car and hooked it up for the test drive
