Engine Fan Not Working?

I noticed the temp gauge has been getting much higher than normal recently (like half way in normal driving) and had half put it down to it being so damn hot and humid but now the weather has cooled the gauge hasn't! So wehn I got home today from work it was reading 1/2 way and I popped the bonnet and found the fan not turning.

I presume the fan should be on at 1/2 way on the temp gauge.

How can i best test the fan and what is likely to be the cause of the fault?

Thanks

Car is a 1995 2.0GT UK model

Hi - it is perfectly normal for the temp gauge to be at the half way point, this is where it should be

let it tick over for about 15 to 20 minutes after a journey , you will or should hear it kick in, but as steve said half way is where it should be as normal.

Odd, the first year or so we have had the car the temp gauge has never got above about a quarter unless we were stuck in traffic for a long time... I know factory gauges are "indicative" rather than a calibrated reading but I thought it was a bit odd for the reading to change?

Thanks chaps.

Have you replaced the thermostat recently as this would account for the change?
