Breaking A Celica - How Hard Is It?

Crahsed my Celica recently :( Swereved to avoid a silly animal and hit a wall!

I've thought long and hard about it, and the only reasonable option seems to be to break it and sell the parts, cos fixing it is going to cost as much as the car itself (which doesn't make sense!)... also, selling it as it is is a joke cos nobody will give more than a couple of hundred (it's badly enough crashed cos the front chassis is damaged).

The only thing is, I'm not a mechanic and don't know much about car parts. Would it be possible for me to break the car myself using a manual or something? I can get some space (not in a garage though, just outside). I assume the hardest thing is removing the engine, and removing clutch and gearbox.

Has anyone broken their Celica and how hard was it?

Sorry to hear that mate, hope you can save for a replacement. Don't know too much about the bigger bits but most if it is a piece of **** to dismatle and sell on. Certain parts are useful to others and worth a fair bit. You could sell parts on here (If you go gold I think) or good old eBay. Look out for parts like electric aerials and other expensive parts that often need swapping.

Hope someone else will come along soon to help you out.

Ben

Yeah sorry to hear about the crash.

It should be a peice of cake to dismantle just undo bolts and keep undoing until bits fall off!!

You might need to be a bit inventive to get the engine out if you haven't got a crane - blocks of wood, car jacks and a few strong mates would help.

But start with the interior and work your way out - that way the interior won't get wet if it rains!

I'd split it into the following parts:

Seats,

Door Cards,

Instrument Panel

Steering wheel (did it have airbag has it gone off?)

Armrest cubby box

Centre Console dash panel

Seperate rest of interior and sell

Doors with windows etc

Tailgate/hatch

Rear lights

rear bumper

wheels

Anything salvageable from the front such as lights etc

Engine

Gearbox

Your biggest problem is you are going to be left with a huge lump of scrap metal at the end!

sorry to hear about that man. Prob some lazy farmer not fixing his fences. I'd say you could make a fair bit breaking it. Hopefully you can get a good chunk of the cost of a new one. I presume you didn't go near the insurance company!

Thanks for the advice guys - looks like I'm going to be a part time breaker for the next couple of months then :) I think I'll just go for it, and I'm hoping to learn more about Celicas from the experience!

You're right Irish Kev, I didn't touch insurance. The car was about £1700 and would have costed around 1500 to fix, or more. So the only option is to break. I really wanted to fix her though, I love this car. But it doesn't make sense.

Thankfully, I've had some money saved for a rainy day - well this is a rainy day so I'm going to take that money out and buy another Celica or possibly MR2, cos the old ones are a lot cheaper. Looking at:

I've been driving a 1990 Toyota Carina for the past month (over 280,000 miles on the clock) so am looking forward to having a faster car again

It's a 1995 GT, ST202. I will ship parts to anywhere in the world when I have them taken out, and will be selling at good prices cos I'll want to get them sold asap (I'm going to be totally broke when I get a replacement car).

If postage is OK I need the following items if you have them:

Armrest/Cubby Box Lid

Drivers Door Card (if it's the type with fake leather/plasticky stuff (rather than material)

Drivers Side Rear Light Cluster

Passenger Side Main beam Light (if it's not smashed)

Side Skirts - if it had them and they don't cost too much to post!

PM me with a price for those bits

Thanks for the interest mate, PM sent.

Anyone else need anything, PM me. I hope to become a gold member soon so I can advertise my wares in the "for sale"section. I may even stick up a website with all available parts.
