Hi folks,

Ive just brought a 1997 celica gt. I've been driving around in it today and noticed im doing around 15 mpg!! I was alittle heavy footed, but its only a 2.0 not a !Removed! 3.0!!

my old Mistubishi evo one use to give me 15mpg when I gave it some. when i start the car first thing in the morning it does seem to smell of petrol, maybe overfueling?

I've drove my mates 2.0 gt and it seems to come alive at 4000rpm but mine is extremely slugish all the way to redline.

plz some1 help me out on this one!! :(

cheers

waj

Could be a problem but no idea what. There is no way a GT should be slugish. It's not the quickest car below 5k but you should certainly feel power. I just got 400miles from my tank when I filled up an hour ago. that's 33MPG, fairly careful driving.

should get 30 mpg normal driving, could be your lambda sensor, if you look at gen6 information pinned at top of forum and scroll down a member call cookci had the same problem i.e between 10 and 20 mpg !! and theres a link where to buy and how to fit the sensor!!

i have a gt and i only get around 60 miles on a tenner, not sure what that means in mpg, doubt if it's over 20 tho. :(

They are just thirsty cars. 170 bhp is a lot for a 2L NA car. But yeah it should make you smile over 4000rpm :D

Well apart from the obvious checking for leaks. I`d suspect the O2 sensor may be mullered.

What kind of miles does the car have? My mate has a GT with nearly 200,000 and it is very hard on the juice - similar MPG to what you're getting.

Mine was fine on the petrol, quite economical really for a 2L. I once got 350 miles from a tank. I also once got under 300 hehe (with a few 0-60 take offs and a little abuse every now and then) but never below that. I think that's pretty good really, in fact it's not an awful lot more expensive than my 1.4i Civic was overall... and much more fun :)

They should not be sluggish at all. The torque takes a while to kick in seriously, but you should feel it torquey through most of the revs, really taking off above 4000rpm. They can feel sluggish going up a hill at 2000rpm, or even 3000 if it's steep.

Check out O2 sensor and lambda, as the other said. I don't really know what else to check...?

its got 122,00 on the clock. How can i tell if the lambda or o2 sensor is buggered? where abouts is the o2 sensor and the lambda sensor located on my car?

Lambda sensor and O2 Sensor are the same thing, just two different names. Yes you have 174bhp and TBH this is a common query to people new to the GT. You will get used to only booting it when you really need to otherwise you will be spending alot of time and money at the Petrol station. Like said above, they have a high BHP for a Non turbo 2.0 engine, but to get the performance means revving the @r$e off it and that uses up alot of fuel. Personally I dont think its the best engine for nippyness as it is useless before 4000rpm and even then dont expect a VTEC type kick. Fill a tank and drive normally and I bet you see a massive difference.

I've tryed driving normally. I got 28 miles for 10 quid of fuel and i didnt even floor it! As i said earlier when you start the car in the morning it does smell quite badly of petrol and even past 4000rpm it does seem alittle flat so maybe it is the o2 sensor?

There not a dear do by any means IIRC about £40 for a new sensor. I get 30 ish of £10 if I am a bit heavy footed! and I only mean a bit. I manage to get about 370 of £45-50 if on motorway.

I get around 120miles out of mine for £20.. thats driving it normal, they do tend to overfuel celicas, ive changed my lamba sensors and reset the ecu, run it on Super still the same. Try all these for yours might help...

Just had the lambda checked, it came out all good! I was told that my injectors maybe blocked or something? so im just about to use some fuel treatment and fill her up and take her out for a long run. Il report back in a few hours.
