I've Chipped My 2.0 D4d

i got one of those piggy back boxes and had it fitted on thursday. the first thing i noticed was that the car seemed more responsive when pulling from juctions or when just moving off. before it seemed to hesitate as it built up revs and i could be stuck in the middle of a junction waiting for the power. now the power delivery is constant.

i havent had a rolling road test done but the extra bhp was claimed to be in the region of +30 so it takes it around 140-145ish. certainly when overtaking it really feels like it picks up speed alot quicker than before. not as ferocious as i thought it might be though. but then it wasnt a quick car to start with.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Matty. It sounds great. I am thinking of getting one of those fitted as it would be more reassuring to have a little bit more muscle at overtakings and at roundabouts. Could you please give a little more information?

Where did you get it fitted?

How badly does it affect your insurance premium?

Thanks

Gunsal

I know exaclty what you mean with waiting for the power to kick in at the low revs :( ! As I also have the 2l but in a Corolla instead.

Also how's your mpg?

Tempted to buy one but at 22 I think my insurance would be ........ well I won't ask - they wanted £50 for window tints

Y'see... Now you've got my attention!

I sometimes get the "crawl away" from lights. It's very embarrasing when a Corsa starts pulling away from you... until the turbo wakes up that is!

since having it fitted last week I have wished I had it done sooner. it pucks up so much better than before. it tended to want to stall unless you had 2k revs but not any more. fuel economy has gone up by 3mpg. they said it would though if you didn't thrash it. as for the insurance. it didn't go up by much at all. although I am a but older than davesr :crybaby:

I keep meaning to compare it to being insured on the 2.2l to see if they are ripping me off for having a mod or just charging me for the extra power.

there are a number of makes if chip boxes tunit, van aken and toyota do their own for some models, which doesn't invalidate the warranty, but I went for a dimsport rapid pro. check out their website, it doesn't give much info on the product though.

I got it fitted in derbyshire but I bet there must be other places if that is too far for you.

as a rough guide my insurance went up £40 whereas if eveything else was the same but i had the 2.2l 140bhp it would have gone up £30. so not much in it and it saved me shelling out another £10k on a new car. :)

I used to work alongside Field Engineers in an Insurance Claims Department. It's not even worth trying to hide it, if you are in a prang and they suspect anything the fine tooth combs are out. If they have an excuse for not paying out they will use it.

i can understand it if you had an induction kit, sports suspension, performance exhaust etc... but if the car looks standard surely they wont know... someone could of fitted it before purchase of vehicle without disclosing it at sale for instance....

I will agree about not telling the ins company because there is nothing showing. because it isnt the type of car, say a boy racer would have, so who would check. but it was £40 more insurance so its not worth thinking about if you can afford to have the mod done in the first place.

as for being able to see the mod you carnt unless you take the glove box off. how many times this would be done within the normal life of the car, I don't know. it is a small box about 4 inch square.

If you prang your car I don't think they would inspect you car to a level detailed enough to pick up the mod. However if you killed someone or had a really bad accident I know that a forensic team go over your car.

Not sure how they would pick/find the modified ECU?

It's not like they could test drive the car if it had been wrecked, but if you killed someone they might be able to tell, but I think you'll be worring about something else ;)

your right davesr. although i was told these d4d engines couldnt be modded with an ecu remap i bet there is data on the computer which would tell you the car setup. when i had my piggy back unit fitted they attached a pod to it and a load of numbers flashed up. they then altered them and now my car has more bhp. they did say that the 145bhp was typical and you could get more or less depending upon the original car setup. so what i am saying is that they must have been able to find out the original bhp and lbft of the car in order to alter them.

or i may be completly wrong. :D
