If it's a common problem, then there will be an aftermarket solution.

Most decent motorfactors will do Recon calipers. These are usually on an exchange basis - you get the new one first though, then get some cash back when you take the old one in. The old one gets sent away for refurbishment and the cycle continues. It's a greener option I suppose, but works out a hell of a lot cheaper than OEM parts.

AE 111 calipers fit straight on and dont seem as prone to siezing so breakers may be an option

Whats this?

AE111 Calipers fit straight on?

Whats actually up with your calipers, because you can usually clean 'em up (the slide area needs a clean every 6 to 12 months)?

Also I have found that pads that are coming to the end of the life don't help. Due to movement of caliper mechanism it can't quite 'pressure' the last bit of meat on old pads, Hence new pads can also make a world of difference.

Finally are your handbrake cables okay ...these have a habbit of seizing.

yep AE111 (frog eye corolla) the 1.6 had disc set up at the rear. the mounting brkt is different but the caliper is the same. undo the 12mm bolt at the bottom and slide off then the new AE111 caliper slides straight on. fitted em to mine before the Tsport conversion

Thanks for that, that is useful

Although most AE111 1.6 'Frogeye's' are drum. I think G6R(1.6) and some G6(1.3) are disc.

Tsport conversion??? Is that Tsport conversion for the rear brakes?

dawesy :

I bought it (was the only one on stand) at a military vehicle and model fair in 2002 (along with a centurion tank model :!Removed!: ). I had been after one myself since 1997 (when I discovered Tamiya had done one)

History of the Toy/Model is it was produced in 1988 (base of kit has this stamped on it) by Tamiya in 1/24th scale, however it DID NOT appear until the 1989 Tamiya UK Catalogue was issued (same age as my real car), it then remained in the '90, 91 and 92 Catalogues but was deleted by 93 issue; so had a very short life.

The kit I feel does capture the lines of the car well. It is badged as a FX 'GT' home market version although gives opptional LHD parts and transfers for USA market version.

The kit/instruction leaflet mentions nothing about the UK market version or it being badged as a 'GTi' (hence you will note the decals along the doors are different to 'real' UK cars.)

Also please note the kit is what we call in the model world a 'curbside model' e.g. No engine :ffs: !

Since aquiring this kit I have seen two overs the years on eBay only.

As can be seen I did as best I could to depict mine ;)

Good luck in your quest!

looks nice. oh well ill keep looking, havng no engine dosnt matter as i would need to get a gt4 kit anyway.

yes TSport rear brake conversion. to be fair its a PITA to do but 1 looks better and 2 it has a drum type handbrake so no more naff handbrake.

however you will need 2 of the following, backplate with brakeshoes etc, disc, caliper and pads and the handbrake cables incl the one at the leaver.

no the problem with fitting is the backplate needs to sit between the hub and the bearing carrier, for this you have to splt the hub, you have to be carefull not to damage the seals though as the later ones (mine) are no longer availiable and toyota want to sell you a complete hub at £70!!

with the hub split the holes need redrilling in the backplate to match the hub.

with that done you can reassemble the hub with backplate inbetween.

then you need to cut off thye old caliper mounting lugs on the hub carrier, bolt hub back on using longer grade 11 bolts, fit disc and caliper but note you may need to shim the caliper to get the disc to sit central think i used 2 2.5mm thk washers. route the cables and connect up the flexi hose. you will now have to adapt the handbrake end as the new cables are longer i made a new compensator to provide the extra length.

i was lucky i got my stuff from a mate that had a 6mth old tsport that had been heavily rolled, he wanted the engine for his elise and i had picings of what was left (not a lot)

Brake set up sounds interesting although from what you have said and the costs that are involved I dont think its something i will consider. It worked out well you the parts for nothing.

The handbrake is a nightmare though on the AE92 as are the rear brakes which need cleaning up at least yearly to keep them working properly and stop them from seizing. Personally i have never been convinced with the set up on the GTi's although a set of braided hoses does make a difference to the feel.

Dawesy is your car now on the road and fully finished?

I recently got a price from my local toyota garage for a disc brake cylinder kit which should have the oil seals in for £42.
