Mk2 Rav4 Vx Rear Spoiler Replacement

Hi folks,

A few months ago, my local car wash very kindly detached the rear spoiler on my VX, snapping a piece off in the process. I collected the bits and have kept them safely ever since.

The spoiler was only held on with double sided sticky tape and there is a nasty sticky residue of this on the car and the spoiler. I've attacked it with ethanol wipes and shifted it a bit, but not completely. I've also superglued the bit that snapped off, but unfortunately the crack was along the seam where the sticky tape attached it to the car.

I would like to re-attach it and have got some new double sided tape for the job, my concern is whether it will be strong enough given that the surfaces aren't completely clean and the spoiler has been repaired.

I don't want to put it back on the car if it is going to come flying off at high speed and cause an accident, but equally I don't want to leave it as the car looks odd without it. I could get a replacement on eBay but even the non-Toyota ones are quite expensive.

Anyone able to offer any advice?

Cheers,

Ali

ahmurray....

oops I would not take mine through a car wash for just the reason you did. :o :o The 3M double sided tape is best and very strong, Noticed mine is loose on one side on the rear glass but still firmly stuck across top of the rear door.....stays in place OK...

I would think as long as the top part is secure you should be fine...

There was a post about this some months ago and I responded that when I bought mine the dealer told me not to use a car wash where the brushes returned back over the vehicle. Never have done and never will.

I would go to the local bodyshop and take some advice. There are some adhesives such as Sikaflex that are astonishingly strong and resiliant but the spoiler will need to be held in place while it cures (possibly with your adhesive tape).

I personally wouldn't trust adhesive tape on its own.

Good luck.

This is a great suggestion  , they have the thinners to get the old sticky glue off ,and the strong motor trade 3M tape to reattach your spoiler...should be money well spent  .

hi, one mopre quick question - there seem to be lots of variants of sikaflex - anyone know which one is best for bonding spoilers?

I think 221 but you can phone their help line. The company is Sika UK and the number is on the web site.

Make sure it is in the right place because it won't come off easily after it has cured.

Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi there, went for Tigel Seal in the end - from my research seemed to be just as good.

a couple of quick questions - anyone know how long it takes to set/cure (no instructions on can) and what is the best way to hold the spoiler in place while it is setting?

Cheers,

Ali
