New Cts'er Needs Advice!

Hi guys....another newbie to the site. Just bought an 02 CTS with 31k and was hoping you may be able to help, theres just a few tiny niggles im after sorting.

Firstly, slowing the car down from 35-45mph through the gears the engine makes a sort of whizzing/droning/hissing sound, a previous post suggested that this may be a fan but only when the car is cold and started up - has anyone expierenced any thing like this?? I did believe it to be a characteristic of the fantastic engine but im unsure coming from a 1.0 yaris, a little clarity would be appreciated...

Also one more thing regarding the central armrest, one of the hinges has snapped which is ok because everything still works albeit a bit loose so was wondering where i may be able to source a hinge from - not really having any luck so far: any help (part numbers, www's etc) will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

Hi Lee,

Congrats on your car mate.

Am no mechanic but this whizzing noise and hissing. Does it occur when the car is first started from cold and the Air Con is on and is it intermitent?

Because mine does it, for about 5 mins on and off and then disappears.

If so don't worry too much about it, probably an air-con service is due but your best checking with toyota to make sure as i'm not entirely sure if the air-con system gets serviced when the car goes in every 10k.

Sorry can't be any more help.

Thanks for the reply rolley. The noise occurs whenever the car is slowing down in gear weather its warm or not and the air con is defo off. Im sure im just being slighlty over critical because i cant really find anything wrong with the car.

hi, its a common fault with the gearbox/ clutch... toyota will tell you its a characteristic of the car... ive had a new clutch and gearbox bearings under warranty.... but i think its something to do with the clutch assembly that makes the noise. anyway, mines not too bad now, you can hear it a little bit and ive done 12k since new clutch was fitted.

dont worry about it... just enjoy the good parts of the car.

when your clutch finally wears out, get an upgraded setup instead, TRD do a sports clutch etc... this will cure the noise for good, so im led to believe.

hope this helps.

i think you will struggle to get a 2nd hand one. mine broke and i had a complete top part on warranty. try main dealers , not sure on price though. im pretty sure you cant buy just the hinge though.

Sorry to Hijack this thread, I nearly always have music playing in the car, a couple of days ago I didn't and noticed a "metallic scraping rattly noise" is the best way I can describe it anybody else notice there car does this its louder the higher up the rev range you go and its when you take your foot off the accelerator and stress is applied to the engine (if that makes sense)...

Its a 2yr old facelift model if that makes any difference...

My mates a Mechanic for Toyota and he says he's looking into it after raising his eyebrows when I took him for a drive to show him the noise, I still have a years warranty left so would like it sorted if there is a problem...

Thanks

One idea l had with the armrest hinge is to go down the nearest scrap yard and try to find a new look corolla, im assuming that all of armrest parts are the same through out the range. You wont get charged an arm and a leg for the part that way!!!

The Strange sounding noise when you decrease speed is indeed to do with the clutch and gear assembily of the car, it means its staring to get worn... DONT PANIC !!!! - this wont mean it will fall apart, its a common fault as was said early about the t-sports l mainly get it happing to me in third gear. It will happen to which ever gear gets used a lot am for me its the third to fourth change - Hehe (l love that change at 8200RPM!!!!!)

And second,

The strange noises when the car starts the whining etc... Thats the VSC and traction control doing a self testing , its in the manual so compleatly normal.

Hope this helps (",)

Bert,

It's not the gearbox noise that's the problem here I think... it's the engine/induction noise as heard through the airvents in the cabin - for some reason the T Sport/Corolla suffers in that department. Reason I think it's this is that it got louder when I installed the induction kit and the sucking noise got louder through the vents on decelleration...
