I was bored today so i decided to remove the resonator box from my gen 6 GT.

This is the fella:

After removing it i went hunting round the house to find something to plug up the hole and discovered the pot from Brylcreem hair wax fits PERFECTLY

Like a GLOVE

It makes a nicer sound now when you push it over 3K

not to mention shaving those valuable 500 or so gramms off the weight :D

By the way, mines the pre-facelift model, i think the post-facelift ones are different.

Nice one  Does it actually sound better? Which size bryl cream cream was it? needs to be painted though.

It does sound slightly nicer, my exhaust is fairly loud though and kind of drowns it out, but i think it definitely makes a difference

it's a smallish pot of wax - 65ml :)

And yeah, i think i'll paint the outside of it

500 grams ?? , i can shed 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound simply visiting the loo before a long drive. :horse:

he hee its amazing where you find stuff to "do the job" :)

done the same to my gen5 GT, and it was the blanking disc off plastic B&Q shelves which I used, !Removed! ideal for the job  then gen5 sounds like a dyson on acid at idle without it

good work mate

Heh cool.

So what does this box actually do (or not) if you can just remove it and bung the hole up?

think its something to do with making the engine quieter.

this post caught my attention, what does the box do before you remove it? and is it worth removing on a gen 5

All the box does is help make the engine Quieter, which is no fun at all

I'm not familiar with the Gen 5 but if it is the same setup as the Gen 6 then it is worth removing, i'm sure a Gen 5 owner will be along to advise you

i removed mine and didnt notice any difference on sound .

Really? mine had a much beefier RAWR at full throttle after 3000 revs :D

What air Filter do you have? I have a Pipercross performance panel filter and holes drilled in the bottom of the air box, maybe it's the increased air flow that increases the sound?

I was thinking about drilling a few holes in the air box to increase the sound slightly. Does anyone know how many and how big is good? I do not want to let in too much hot air though.

I just drilled 6 holes about 15mm i think. I put them in the right hand end of the box, furthest from the engine, it's fairly open below there and away from the hot air

TRD panel filter and a few holes drilled at the bottom of the box. Maybe i just cant hear it over the exhaust

Yeah, it's fairly subtle, so if your exhaust is loud it could be drowned out, but it is there
