Could someone give some advice please ,on my Corolla 1991 model fitted with drum brakes.

This weekend I am hopefully fitting new drum brakes to the rear of this car.

It seems straight forward but for the handbrake auto self adjusting mechanism

Do I have to reset this somehow and if so how please?

You will need to consider two issues which are not covered on the HAYNES manual:

(i) Trying to remove the hub using the 'extraction' bolts is a waste of time. The only real way to get the drums off is with a heavy mallet. Repeated strikes on the face and edge will loosen the corrosion and free the drums.

(ii) The self-adjusting mechanism resets by setting and releasing the handbrake whilst the car is on the axel-stands. Yu will hear the mechanism continue to 'click' until the adjusters push the shoes to the optimum position.

Hi Gazza,

Thanks for replying.

So do not have to reset the handbrake auto adjustment manually,

or do they reset themselves.

Sorry I must sound like an Idiot, but I have only fitted drum shoes to

a Ford escort were you reset it using a screwdriver.
