Still Got Abs Problem After Changing 2 Broken Sensors:(

Hello there

Quick question

I went to a garage bascially told me its the front 2 sensors

They quoted me a price and i said go ahead

Next day they called and price had changed since they found "other" problems.

however I was forced to buy the 2 x sensors which cost £250!!

%&$*&%^

!!

Anyways.. had the 2 sensors fitted

Went to check ABS and when the lights on the dash come on, it switches off after a while (it was constantly on before..!)

But when i drive it and press the brakes.. it judders quite bad.. and then gives up and the ABS light comes on..

Is there like fluid that goes into the pump ?

Or something ? or the pump itself.

What can i try

i tried reset the ECU etc but it doesnt make a difference.

Please help

I did a ssearch on ABS but its too short for searching!! I tried manually searching.. couldnt find anything

Oh yes.. its a ST182 GT 1993

Regards

DJ

PS: I did the error code thing and its either 32 or 23

Ill check properly tomorrow.

left front is the problem area , did they clear the fault codes for you manually . it may be a speed sensor and not the abs at fault . have you tried stamping on the brake to see if that wheel locks up at all . best do it in the wet .

read my sticky post on abs faults .

funny cat pressing away there..LOL

hi GT4 Booster

thanks for replying.

I have read your sticky. I doubt very much the ABS sensor is at fault since I bought original sensors from Toyota and they are brand new!

I cleared the faults, weii i unplugged the EFI and also Battery to clear ECU ?

I also did the pressing brake 8 times in 3 seconds.. but i dont know if i did it correctly

I shall try all today again.

I am doing this myself, so no one cleared any faults for me.

So say if its the speed sensor, is that a costly job ? ( these 2 sensors already cost me £250 on a 13 year old car!! )

And how can i fix this speed sensor ?

Thanks

DJ

One more question, what happens if my car never had a short pin in the diagnostics port?

Could that be the case of my problem as well ?

what dpes the short pin though

since mine is missing, can i just wedge a paper clip in there ?

it over rides certain pin out combinations , a bit like a shift key on a pc keyboard , i'd recommend putting 1 in there.

250 was expensive i got 2 fronts for a gen 6 celica for 160 quid from a dealer.

do try the brakes and see if a wheel locks up , if one dont lock up then the abs is fine and the fault lies elsewhere. Unsure about speed sensors would have to look into it.

SPECIAL WSS TEST MODE

If you’ve found a fault code for a wheel speed sensor, it may be due to an open or short in the sensor’s wiring harness, physical damage to the sensor or sensor ring, a buildup of metallic debris on the sensor tip or corrosion.

Toyota provides a special wheel speed sensor diagnostic procedure that can generate additional codes to help you diagnose the underlying fault. Though this test is really redundant, it may help you isolate a troublesome wheel speed sensor.

To enter the special WSS test mode, turn off the ignition. Leave the short pin in the ABS check connector and use a jumper wire to connect terminals Ts and E1. Engage the parking brake and start the engine. If the system is in the special diagnostic mode, the ABS light will flash at a rate of four times per second.

Drive the vehicle straight ahead at a speed above 50 mph. The ABS light will stop blinking as soon as you exceed 28 mph, then blink once when you hit 50 mph. As soon as you’ve seen the blinks, the test is complete and you can stop the vehicle.

To retrieve the wheel speed sensor codes, use the same diagnostic procedure that you would use to read the normal ABS codes. Remove the short pin from the ABS check connector and jump Tc to E1. If a problem was detected in any of the wheel speed sensor circuits, you’ll find one or more of the following codes:

71 — Low voltage in right front WSS circuit.

72 — Low voltage in left front WSS circuit.

73 — Low voltage in right rear WSS circuit.

74 — Low voltage in left rear WSS circuit.

75 — Abnormal signal from right front speed sensor. Check the sensor ring on the right front brake rotor for damage or debris.

76 — Abnormal signal from the left front speed sensor. Check the sensor ring on the left front brake rotor for damage or debris.

77 — Abnormal signal from the right rear speed sensor. Check the sensor ring on the right rear brake.

78 — Abnormal signal from the left rear speed sensor. Check the sensor ring on the left rear brake.

Light blinks four times a second — No problem found. All speed sensors are reading normal.

ok ill put a short pin in there to see if it makes a difference.

yep damn garage made me purchase at £250 but he showed me the invoice from toyota.

I hate these garages man.. i recently had ball joints chnaged on my own. dont rely on garages they here to rip you off

Definitely code 32

Anyways, i thoguth it might be worth trying to clear the codes (brake 8+ times in 3 seconds) but the light blinks non stop probably telling me that there is still a problem

Anyways connected for the WSS test

And cannot get it in test mode..

Also cannot find a place to put the short pin is (i dont think it has one) Anyone confirm that a gen 5 st182 doesnt have a short pin..lol

i took the car for a spin and the light didnt come on. So i brake hard and i could feel the ABS (it stops the car without sliding..) and then the light came on..

SO i switch off engine

and switch back on and light when out

Raced round the corner and hit the brake full, light didnt come on this time.

Since it was kind of rusjh hour, i thought id leave the braking for another day incase the wikids come and and think im some boy racer crap.!

Well all i can say its code 32 right now..

I dont know what to do next

?

hard to find a road here where i can do more than 50mph..lol

ALso what do you advise GT4 booster? (or anyone else ?)

If the ABS light blinks at a constant rate of two times per second, there are no fault codes stored in memory.

It was blinking constantly without any delay.. jus consistent blinks.

Im guessing it means that three is an error somewhere?
