steering or drive shaft couplings?

find a big empty tarmac area, drop all the windows and drive forwards in tightening circles to the left and right. Then do this again in reverse. if the clunk happens with the steering turned then suspect the outboard CV joints. If it only does it with the car in a straight line then suspect the inboard driveshaft joints to the differential.

You could also take a look at the engine mountings just in case one of these has split.

Steering column lower shaft u/j section may need packing out with grease to take up the freeplay causing the clunking noise when turning. Can you feel it through the steering wheel when turning?

Hi just a thought does this only happen in reverse, and thinking about it are you using controlled braking when reversing, as if you are braking it is your pads or discs slightly moving and you get a kerdunk noise.New pads/ discs will solve the problem, but it does not mean they are no good, years ago the discs had a little grub screw in which held them tight, now its just the calipers and the wheel nuts doing the same job.

 Thank you to those who replied to my 'clunk' problem on the Avensis.

rf76 was spot on with his solution many thanks rf76.

I took the car into my local Toyota garage and they confirmed your diagnosis, dismantled the joint repacked with grease and hey presto!! problem solved.

Charge £56 plus Vat (plus a free overall inspection)which I am happy with, thought it could have been a really expensive problem.
