Clunk From Rear

Is your 1994> Rav 4 making a clonk from the rear end when you pull away? If so, heres how to fix it in a nut shell:

Buy a new bush kit (Consists of an arched piece of metal with bushes at each end and two long bolts, about £80 inc VAT Genuine Part)

Remove the four ball joints at each rear wheel.

Undo the two bolts holding the rear diff to the arched piece of metal in front of it.

Undo the two bolts and two nuts holding the diff and suspension arms above the rear diff.

Carefully ease the suspension assembly down and towards the rear of the car whilst easing the bush assembly out until it comes clear of the housing.

Fit the new bush assembly and refit as per removal.

To fit the ball joints - if they are spinning, compress the bottom one with a jack whilst you do it up, and the top one use the vehicles scissor jack to compress the arm gently against the underside of the car as you do it up.

Have the wheel alignment checked.

You will need 4x new split pins, torque wrench, spanners (17 and 19mm) Sockets, axle stands, trolley jacks (2 makes life easier), pliers, wheel chocks, wheel wrench, ball joint splitter. A good few hours!

Note: There is some considerable movement created on the vehicle as you loosen and tighten the bolts - ensure the vehicle is secure as it's your body underneath!

Ease rating: ** Difficult

Hope this helps you have a quieter life!
