can anyone please tell me why there are 3 notches on the auto box oil level dipstick. i have been reading mine when the engine is off and the gearbox is cold. the level is on the highest notch. is this correct and am i reading it correctly.

They should be read with engine hot and running after putting it though the gears to load the torque converter...

Hi Mattie

I would guess that the lower and middle notches denote max and min for cold oil, around 20 degrees C. The middle and upper notches denote max and min for hot oil above 80 degrees C. Oil level is best checked after a run, 10-15 mins is far enough. Make sure car is level, engine running in P or N, doesn't matter which and use non-fluffy rag or tissue to wipe your dipstick. Overfilling can cause as many problems as underfilling.

Cheers Ray
