Rumble From 99 Avensis Air Con Unit

Have a rumbling noise everytime the air con kicks in on my 99 CDX, spoke to the dealer and after

a sharp intake of breath he joyfully informed me it was either the bearing in the pump unit or the one in the magnetic clutch, cost of £800 or £350 respectivly to put right, also spoke to an air con specialist who seemed sure he could rebuild, installing a new bearing, wondered if anyone else has had this problem
