Specifs In Leaking Sunroof

Hi all,

My RAV4 05 XT-R has the dreaded water leak in the roof-had it into the dealers in Edinburgh, who have rebonded the windscreen (it was replaced at some point before I bought it) and "investigated" the sunroof.

Guess what-first heavy rainfall, the water is now coming through the windscreen (!) and I'm still getting water dripping through the sunglasses holder. So I now have 2 faults

My question is:

does any body know, who has had this fixed, what the actual fault was/where it was? Reading through the forums, it is is a well-known problem but as I'm going to take it back to them , I'd like to go armed with some specific information

Thanks

Stew

And excuse my atrocious spelling in the title subject

Stew,

I don't know whether this is typical, but here's my story.

My '03 GX leaked from new exactly as you describe - water dripping or running from the area of the sunglass holder.

I noticed there was a clearly visible gap in one particular area between the upper surface of the glass and lower surface of the rubber seal that runs around the edge of the glass. It appeared as if the rubber seal was warped or kinked at that point.

I think (because it was done under warranty) the dealer replaced the whole glass roof complete with seal and I haven't experienced the leak since.

Good luck getting this sorted.

Greg.

I have read either on this forum or www.rav4world.com that the rain channels get blocked and this has caused the roof to leak.

You dont mention that these have been checked, so may be worth while getting them blown out or looked at.....

may help :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Chaps,

Thanks for the reply- as I sit here, I've just been out and taken my green towel (ex-RAF and I kept a few things :) ) out from over the gear stick-guess what-soaking wet.At least it's not the footwell :ffs:

They (Western Toyota) have taken out the windscreen as it was leaking slightly when I reported it at first-that wasn't the main fault, methinks, but it is worse then before <sigh>

I'll have a look in the morning at the sunroof again cause I never even mentioned it when I first took it in but the service guy immediately picked up on it-dont know what they did but it didn't fix it

In their defense, I have had good service off them (I have a Celica from them as well) and they been generally good, apart from the sales guy who sold me the RAV-4, and when questioned about the big scrape on the driver side arch, said "well, what do you expect from a used car?"

Just a pain cause I live in Airdrie-there is a Shields Toyota in Hamilton but I prefer to get it done by the garage who sold it to me, and know the history. Back up the M8,I suppose :(

Cheers

Stew

This problem occured to me on my 03 Rav4.

It went in 6 times until it was cured.

Firstly they checked the drain channels - to no avail , then sealed all around the sunglasses box / light area - again to no avail.

Eventually they got a specialist sunroof company in and after several attmpts found the problem to be the rubber seal around the sunroof itself that meets the roof bodywork had not been bonded to the glass of the sunroof.

Once this had been bonded to the glass sunroof all was cured . however it did take several months.

If I would of known I would have removed myself ( not tot difficult by the looks ) and bonded the seal  with some silicone to save the worry of parking it ouside hoping it wouldn't be wet on return

Hope this helps
