Gearbox Oil Change

Im looking at changing the gearbox oil my self, has anyone done it before that can give me a few pointers.

And has anyone used gearbox racing oil ? l hear that it is quite good :D

there are two plugs on the bottom of the transmission, remove the bottom one to drain all the oil out. refit then undo the top one, refil until oil starts to drip out the top one, then refit that plug.

Thanks for that nrgizer, l was hoping it would be that simple.

My gearbox does seem to have a problem at the mo, it is really hard to get into first gear and reverse is a bit of a pain as well no other gear is a problem.

Its weird it doesnt happen when the car is first started, but once the car has heated up l start to get the problems.

Any help on this problem would be fantastic!!!

^This used to be a problem with 1980'S Fords.

In the late 80's and early 90's I was a quite into XR fords and both my ESCORT and XR2 Fiesta suffered from 'crunchy' selection into reverse. The recomendation was MOLYSLIP gearbox additive.

I believe it is still available, it comes in a tube/syringe with a flexiable rubber tube to enable you to squeeze it into the Gearbox 'inlet'/filler plug hole.

It made selection much easier as (i believe) it puts a sort of coating on the moving parts.

I also remember 80's ford gearboxes had a repution for early failure problems ...yet mine never did; perhaps this too was thanks to the Molyslip. :yes:

Thanks Twincam, l will have a look into getting some of that. May be the new gearbox oil change might make a diffence with changing the gears. Does anyone know what gearbox oil l should use? Im looking into gettin some Fully-Synthetic racing oil.

But its still seems strange that l am not having this problem when the car is first started, it start's happing when the car has been used for a while and is warmed up.

ive got some sikolene silktran syn 5 race oil for my corolla, aint tryed it yet but it was recommended by www.opieoils.co.uk.

75w90 gear oil is what is recommended in the manual.

Make sure you get this spec otherwise you will either wear the synchro quick or result in crunchy changes.

I'd go Mobil 1 PersonallY!

Yep, correct! ...just like the Fords did.

It was because the oil was getting hotter and thus thiner so would not be so good at 'lubricating'.

l've had a look at the Mobil 1 oil and that looks good, im also looking at Amsoil synthetic racing oil has anyone tryed it ?

Prob looking at doing the oil change in the next two weeks l will let you know how the car is doing after that.

I'm also doing a gearbox oilchange and i don't know how to get the oil in the small hole that is on the side of the gearbox. Do i need a special hose to fill the new oil?

yeah you need some hose thats about 10mm outer diameter, the inner diameter is not important. Use a funnel on top of it and then pour it in.

I'm doing my gearbox at the weekend so a guide will follow *probably*!

gearbox oil changed and it was pretty easy but a bit messy. I got a pump that i filled with the oil and then pumped it in through a 10 mm hose. Without the pump and pouring from the bottle would be veeeery messy so get a manual pressure-pump before you go changing gearbox-oil
