We've had this discussion before but I have changed mymind on the plural of Yaris.

We all pretty much agreed that the plural of Yaris should be Yari.

However, Yaris is a proper noun and I think it should be respected in such a way as my surname (Maris) and simply put an apostrophe on the end: Yaris'

I am rubbish at English grammar and am probably completly wrong in my reasoning but I thought I'd open the topic for debate again :) :thumbsup:

I have always said its Yaris' and not Yarii, Yarises etc etc. I have never agreed it is Yari! :lol:

That's the correct way grammatically, as you say, when something ends in "s", you apostrophe it,

So plural of James is James' but pronounced Jameses. You wouldnt say two James are Jami so why are two Yaris' Yari?

I have always been the sort who cannot stand incorrect spelling and grammar - same with txt spk... hate it, think its the lazy way of writing. Its very basic English, the sort taught in middle school.

So my vote goes with the correct version, that is Yaris' :thumbsup:

I think what is equally important is what you call a collection of yari/yaris'/yaris's/other. Is it a flock, school, pride, gaggle, set etc?

Personally I think it should be a pride of Yari.

Well I've regularly used Yarii in the past, but lately I find myself saying the Yaris' so it sounds like Yarises...sounds better that way IMO.

I've voted for "Yari" because it's fun, no other reason. :yahoo:

Pluralising with an apostrophe always strikes me as awkward. It may be correct but it's still clumsy and I find myself thinking of it in a "possessive" way.

What about Octopus as a plural?

That isn't Octopus'!

;)

Yeah but its also not Octopi! :lol::lol: Its actually Octopode ;)

Did I say it was Octopi?

I was merely pointing out, that not all plurals that end with an "s," have the apostrophe on the end.

I'm with Al - YARII FTMFW!!!!

Oooh shirty John Boy!

No you didnt say it was, but just incase you were going to strengthen your argument with the Yari-Octopi argument, you would have been seriously mistaken! :P

Because contrary to popular belief, the plural of Octopus is not Octopi! ;)

Therefore he plural of Yaris is not Yari! :D

And thats numberwang! :lol::lol:

Yaris' is apprently the exact equivalent of Yaris's e.g. the singlular possesive - The Yaris' seats are comfortable

Yarises is the plural, e.g. All our Yarises are made by Toyota

Yarises' would be the plural possesive...

Although not gramatically correct I have always thought YARII seemed right for me :yahoo:

[As stated above, Yaris' is incorrect grammar. Full stop. WRONG.

There are only imo two options:

The Latin one: Yares (declined Yaris, Yari Yare, Yares, Yares, Yaribmus???) Rusty Latin..

or Yarises which is the logical English one. (as in tortoises, or Borises, )

Personally I prefer Yarises :-)

But noun plurals that end in 'is' are changed to end in 'es' by also removing the previous 'is' and adding 'es'

For words that end in -is, change the -is to -es to make the plural form.

* synopsis--synopses

* thesis--theses

So surely based on that argument it should be Yares and not Yarises?

Just a thought - are we all really that bored, that we're arguing over the plural for Yaris??? :D

Dont sulk because this debate has gone over your head. :D :thumbsup:

With reference to the above graphic, I agree with Blue84. The "Yaris'" possibility always strikes me as a posessive so I prefer to go with the classical declination leading to Yari.
