Advice On Hid Xenon Light Conversion

hello,

i am thinking of doing a HID conversion on my new shape 02 model corolla TSpirit. i've found the following kit on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=150036455421

however, i confused as to how exactly it works, can anyone please clarify this for me.

looking at my headlights, it seems to consist of two bulbs on each head light. however, all the HID conversions seem to come with 2 bulbs only. How exactly does this work.

And i am confused regarding the hi/low beam function that some HID conversion kits come with. Do i need this or not? what exactly is this? has it got something to do with my beam light? and if i dont get it will it effect my beam light?

i am a complete newbie to this HID xenon technology, so i would really appreciate as much explanation to this as possible

many thanks

As you/we have two dip bulbs and two main beam bulbs I would imagine that two kits would be required as the respective bulbs are of a different sort.

For example you would need a 9006 kit for dip and a 9005 for mains.(insert correct part number to suit individual car!)

If a car had a single dip and main beam bulb I imagine that they vary the power output into the HID bulb to get the bright/dim adjustment.

Hope this helps and thanks for the link, I may get some

so what are your opinios? and how exactly does it work? (sorry if i may sound stupid....)

as the price is quite appealing and i might give it a try once i save some 'extra' money.

thanks

nrgizerbunny says that the corollas take H7 lights whereas others say that it takes 9006 for low beam and the high beam is 9005. and i went to the following URL to find out the bulb sizes, and according to the site. the corolla 02 and 03 model need 9006 and 9005 bulbs.

i am left a bit confused now. can anyone please clarify this.

according to some HID conversion kit sellers, i will need two sets of HID conversion kits to convert both low and high beam.

can anyone please explain to me what exactly low and high beam is (sorry for sounding dumb) i was under the impression that the headlight just has one bulb and thats all that needed replacing

thanks

have a look in your manual, they are H7. or ask DaveSR he ordered new bulbs like me and they are H7.

you will need two kits as the dipped and main beam or on different bulbs.

if you had h4 lights, the dipped and main beam are on one bulb in which case 1 kit would suffice

thanks for your reply nrgizerbunny. if my corolla takes H7 bulbs, am i correct in thinking that all i need to do is purchase two HID kits with four H7 bulbs?

as a result i will have to mount 4 ballasts in the engine compartment. is there enough room to put 4 of these ballast devices?

i am thinking of getting the 6000K bulb temperature, do you know if thats legal. are any of these legal on the road? i dont want to end up getting pulled over by cops :crybaby:

nrgizerbunny, according to my corolla manual, the high beam bulb is a H7 and the low beam is a HB3. but no one seems to sell HID kits with HB3 bulbs. what did you use for your low beam?

ahmed, make sure you are looking at "hatchback" in the manual.

i did the same as you, then went and actually took the car apart only to find H7's. went and reconsulted the manual and sure enough under hatch it said H7.

only exception is if you have an estate, in which case the lights are different.

All hatches made in derby have H7.

nrgizerbunny, your right i didnt look in the hatchback section :o it seems both are H7 after all then :P

do yo have any bulb colour temperature that you would recommend? which one did you go for? i am thinking of going for a 6000k, do you think thats ok?

by the way, would i need to aiming and align the HID bulbs after installing it?

If your current alignment is ok now, then they will not need aligning with HIDs.

Btw, most people are happy with HIDs on just the low beam.

I know i am

If you check, these are the same people as in your first post, just a different advert

I think it looks ok and was going to use them myself

HIDS/Xenons are only legal with headight washers, HOWEVER, its very rare that you fail an MOT just becuase you have HIDS on standard headlights without washers.

I know of people with HIDS on headlights without washers pass MOTs no problem.

sorry what are headight washers? i read somewhere that aftermarket HID kits that are installed are not legal and that the ones that come installed from manufacturers are legal.

does anyone know if HID kits with xenon bulbs generate any excessive heat? i also remember reading somewhere that some bulbs generate high heat and can cause the headlight lens to melt

Headlight washers are basically squirters and a wiper on your headlights. basically a mini setup of what you have on your windscreen/backwindow on the headlight!

Hold on:

I recently added HIDS to my corolla (06, Corolla SR) 8000k.

The main beam is H7, theirs no point changing the dipped beam bulb as you hardly use it.

E12 (facelift) has two bulbs, one for the main beam and one for the dipped beam. The dipped beam bulb is in sideways.

Check out my recent thread on my conversion.

i purchased my HID kit, just need some quick advice.

the power source for the HID kit needs to come from the existing bulb power source on the car. So i am wondering, how do i identify the positive wire and the negative wire on the cars bulb wire? anyone know?

thanks

black and red are usualy a good give away

funny thing is, i dont have black and red thats coming from the car, it's yellow and black. is yellow positive? is there anyway to confirm it?

i would take a guess that yellow would be the positive as usualy the darker colour is the negative. it you get it the wrong way round it shouldnt blow anything up, it just wont work. if your lights dont come on swap them around.

or get yourself an multimeter put the probes on the wires, if the current goes to the positive with the right probes on the wires (ie. if the red probe is on the yellow wire and the black on the black wire) then the yellow will be positive. the the multimeter reads in the negatives then you have black will be the positive.

you can get a mulimeter for £10.67 from www.maplin.co.uk
