Speedometer Problems

My 05 Yaris has been showing 0 MPH intermittently when driving. The dealer has already changed the sensor, however the problem keeps recurring (say about once a fortnight). The fault shows immediately after starting in the morning and when conditions have been wet overnight. On the last two occasions the fault has extended to the steering becoming incredibly light - I know when the speedometer has began to work (typically after approximately 8 miles driving) because the steering feel returns to normal. The dealer is really struggling to determine the fault, however now suspect a faulty ECU directly relating to the steering and will change this in about a week's time.

Can anyone throw any light onto the cause of this problem? Any help will be much appreciated. This is the only problem I have had with my car.

Thanks,

Kenny :help:

Welcome to the club Kenny

sorry to hear about your problem,

however when your car goes to the dealer next week please make sure you have a loan car from them, and dont accept your car back till they fix your fault.

a steering fault could be dangerous, esp if your steering goes light at speed :shutit:

Hi Kenny

yep I can confirm the signal from the gearbox sensor does indead go through the engine ECU. The power steering also has a signal from the engine ECU that relates to vehicle speed. The ECU tells the power steering to work harder at lower vehicle speeds because more steering force is required when driving slow. This is why it effects the way the power steering behaves when the speedo goes wierd. If the gearbox vehicle speed sensor has already been replaced and the relevent wiring checked, then yep the ECU is the next in line to try. Good luck

That sounds serious.

I agree with kimi, get it to a dealer, make sure you get a loan car from them, and don't take you car back off them until the fault is fixed.

In my eyes/mind/head/thoughts the Yaris is not fit for use.

Good luck

As a matter of interest, did the Engine light came on?

Thanks Benno!

Nightmare continues!

2 days in garage - speedometer assembly replaced - fault occurred next day. Car going back in for a review - I agree that the ECU is a probable source of the fault. Engine warning-light is on at present when driving and has done so sometimes in the past when this fault occurs.

If it's the same fault the wife had with her's it was to do with the throttle module at the front of the car, the symptoms it gives are no mph reading or mph jumping about very erratic, dash board lights would stay on even with ignition off, there were all sorts of things going on with the dash. I think that was what it was called, but it's a sealed module in front of the Battery nearside, costs £110 for the newer updated one and it's a fit and forget no coding. Having said that we never had a problem with the power steering.
