Heater Matrix On Landcruiser Prado

Hi People! :help:

I have a '97 Landcruiser 3.0TD Prado. Sorry if this is not the correct place to post? I know they're pretty similar to the surf though?

Anyway, the coolant is going down and the inside of the drivers footwell has been getting damp  . I lifted the carpet and checked the condition of the gromets in the floor - all seems fine. The door seals seem in good condition, as do the window rubbers. The coolant has recently started to go down more quickly and the cab has started to smell a bit funky :( I'm guessing it may be game over for the matrix? Just wondered if anyone had any advice on looking into this? I'm a reasonably competent DIY mechanic (the worst type of mechanic! haha). The vehicle has climate controll (it may be standard, i'm not sure). If anyone has an idea of cost of the parts which may be required (matrix/any pipes prone to splitting?) I would be very greatful! I just need a nudge in the right direction! :yahoo:

Many thanks, Phil :D

Hi Phil,

I've just replaced a matrix in a Celica. Same symptoms as yours, damp footwell, loss of coolant.

You can ( probably ) bypass the matrix as an interim measure from within the engine bay with a bit of creative plumbing. I use the word probably as I'm not familiar with the landcruiser - not questioning your spannering ability !

The Celica job was a full dash-out job, but you MAY find yours a bit easier due to the height of your vehicle and subsequent extra room .

If yours needs replacing then DON'T get one from a breakers. It's usually a pig of a job to change anyway, so fitting a known good one is really the way to go. Places like Motorcool Services, or any good motor factors can supply new items at a fraction of the price of a genuine new one.

There's a Thread in the Celica Section about my ordeal if you're up for some heavy reading !

Good luck
