Just been out in the dark on the mway in the Aygo for the first time. Sadly, the headlamps are pretty poor.

Does anyone have any recommendations for replacement bulbs? If so what is the part number and where can you buy them at a good price?

I'm not looking for chavvy blue ones or anything :P

Thanks.

The Osram Silverstar is supposed to be a pretty good bulb!

I thought they were poor until i realised that they were adjusted to high, have you played with the load adjustment thing to see if it improves the situation?

Yes thanks, tried it - only made things worse!

Do you know the size, H7 for example?

Bulb specifications/ types should be found in the handbook supplied with the car

Never thought of that, I'll have a look.

I think the headlights are quite good but anyway. The fitment is H4 and the Aygo comes with those bulbs anyway so don't waste your money buying a second set.

It is possible to get H4 bulbs with xenon gas in them instead of halogen.

These give approx 50% better lighting for the same power rating.

Available through all good accessory outlets.............and some bad ones ;)

Thanks for the info.

The Aygo headlights are terrible compared with my mkV Golf which has standard lights, not Xenons which are a £750 option :o

just bought some xenon gas bulbs will tell you how they are once i install them.

Just get HIDS upgrades, around £100. Only then you will see a difference

Put my bulbs in yesterday and I took a picture with a normal bulb in and a new bulb in on the right.

I think it makes a bit of a differnce

iLLestJT, do you onow where i can get a HIDS upgrade for the AYGO?

Thanks

Are these "real" Xenons, i.e gas discharge lamps?

If so are they legal? I thought Xenons had to have an auto-levelling function AND washers?

Not on mine. They are just imitation.

A bit af a late response maybe, but since I only installed xenon on my Aygo last saturday

I can only answer it now: try eBay! You DO have to be carefull; check if the set is available

for lefthand side traffic: the beam of an H4-bulb (the ones the Aygo uses) is asymmetrical,

so the shoulder of the road is lit more that the axis, as not to blind oncoming traffic.

But if you drive on the opposite side of the road you need buld that illuminate opposit too!!!

You'd be best off buying form a UK seller, as they will most probably sell the correct sets...

As for the result:

HID_voor-na_High-stuck.jpg

HID_voor-na_OnRoad.jpg

In both pictures the left image is Halogen (OEM) and the right is HID.

The top image illuminating the door was supposed to be low beams,

but when testing my righthand bulb got stuck on high beam,

that's why the most righthand spot of light is too high up...

And looking at the car looks great too:

Looks good man. I just ordered Philips Blue vision headlights and interior lights today. Is it difficult to replace the headlights? Is it true you have to take of the front bumper????

cheers

Just replacing the bulbs can be done without removing the light units.

I planned on installing my HID without removing anything either, but

then I made a small mistake in letting a side-light bulb drop into the unit...

And since I had to remove the light to get it out anyway I took advantage of

the situation and installed my HID's off-car and only did the wiring on-car...

Turned out to be a good thing too, as I had to make a slight modification to my

HID-bulbs to get them to fit properly and having the lights off made it possible to

take them to my grinder instead of walking to and from the car several times...

It also made for an easier fitment of the grommets around the solenoids for switching between high and low beam:

HID_rubber.jpg

If you want to take out the headlights you can't get aroud removing the bumper,

as two of the three mounting screws for each light are hidden behind the bumper...

Removing the bumper isn't that hard or time consuming as it looks anyway;

the first time I did it it took me 30 minutes as I still had to look and feel for everything.

Nowadays (5 times more experienced) it only takes me 8 minutes...

If youjust want to remove the headlights you MIGHT be able to leae the bumper partially mounted,

only removing the upper 3 screws, the "clippy-thingy" and the plug-like things in the wheel wells,

then separating the plastics and flexing them out of the way to get to the screws for the headlights.

Here's my Aygo without the bumper:

100_1211.JPG

The lights are secured with three screws each:

- one at the top corner, visible in plain sight when you open the hood

- one at the "inside" corner, ontop of te radiator support, hidden under the top part of the bumper

- one on the lower corner, where the headligh, bumper and side wing meet, also underneath the bumper...

The bumper is secured by three screws at the front edge under the hood and a black plastic clip,

a plug-like clip in each wheel well that you have to pry out with a screw driver at the edge of the

bumper and the metal wing and 5 big screws on the bottom, only visible and accessible from

underneath (car dos NOT need to be on a lift: you need to be on the floor). There's 3 of equal length

!Removed! the bumper into the plastic bottom cover and the outer ones near the wheels are about 1/2"

longer and screw through a special clip with threads or something in them.

If you take a look at the AIM for fitting foglights it's all illustratded very clearly...

Hope this helps...

Don't the HID lights get too hot for Aygo's plastic headlight units? Has the reflector shown signs of deterioration?

Thats what concerns me.

The beam feels LESS hot. The actual bulb might be hotter, but I doubt it,

as there are several retrofit kits on the market with PLASTIC fittings...

The piece you actually put the bulb into is METAL:

HID_slijpwerk.jpg

the circles note where I had to grind down the bulbholder fractionally to get it to fit better

Has the reflector shown signs of deterioration?

Too soon to tell for me as I've only had them in since saturday,

but on the Dutch Aygo forum there are several others that

run HID's and none of them have reported anything so far...

Theoretically there would be LESS heat: there's LESS power consumption

(35W each opposed to 55 to 60W with halogens) and there's MORE light.

Since there's only so much energy available to split between heat and

light I'd think they run at LOWER temperatures...

Posted

Maybe the total heat being pumped into the headlight assembly is lower, but HID bulb definitely operates at a higher temperature (approx 6000k). Since HID is more efficient as a light source, it doesn't mean the ratio between heat and light are comparable to filament bulbs

The ratio is definately different, but imho the SUM of the light energy

and the heat energy still has to equal the consumed electrical energy.

Or am i thinking too simple now???

Now that I think of it: there's extra loss in the Ballast from transforming

the 12V in the car up to +85V when lit and over 20kV when starting up...
