Sorry for being completely dim but how do dipped headlights work? Are they separate bulbs?

That's very rare.

On most cars they're a single bulb with two filaments; that's why the bulbs have three connections - 1 for each filament and one earth.

Ah that makes sense :D So the Philips X-treme H4 bulbs will do both?

As long as you get the proper bulb it will work.

In essence an H4 is ALWAYS a dual filament. All

the others (H1, H3, H7 and such) are single filament.

Fitted the Philips buls to my 107 - huge improvement.

Tip for fitting is to use a little mirror to see what you are doing.

Dear god almighty i cannot backup this tip enough - i had recently fitted Philips Power2Night H4 bulbs to my car and its a bloody tight squeeze (many of my friends say i have shovels for hands so you can paint yourself a flattering picture with that  lol)

Halfway during the installation i discovered a way to make it real easy - i'll take pictures later on today step by step on how to do this :)

*EDIT* These Power2Night bulbs are simply immense - £20 and you can literally see double the distance!

Toyota claim in the September "Today Tomorrow" magazine that the Aygo has Class leading Illumination:

"Its headlights have a class leading illumination range of more than 80 metres on low beam"............(Page 30)

Do they really need any improvement?

Posted

Oh yes the bulbs need replacing - they're not all that brilliant, especially when £20 gets you near-HID results without the MOT/Legal Complications/hassle

A thoroughly recommended product
