:D Hi all, i have a 2000 1.8 avensis with the lean burn enigine and have got to the point now of wanting to remove my back box because the noise from it is giveing me headaches. Anyway the problem i have is my insurance is performance/modifyed only, which obviously means any mods has to be performance related, ie exhaust. I was thinking of what other mod to put on the car but came up with nothing, , if anyone can think of anything else performance wise i can put on the car down the engine or exhaust route please let me know, im desperate!!!, i only have a small budget aswell guys, thx all kind regards :D.

Hi fella. Have u fitted a K&N or an Ecotec valve? The Ecotec valve valve actually does work despite the 7A-FE engine already being lean burn. I was getting approx 450 miles to a full tank in mine on long runs and I have a heavy right foot too! They can be purchased from POTN.com for around £60 and really easy to fit and transferrable to any petrol engined car. Worth a try matey

Hiya,

I have a 1.8 Sreg GS, getting around 425 per tank which is great, talking of performace is this the same engine as the 115 BHP 1.8 celica of the same period as our engines only have 108BHP...

I wouldn't have thought you could do much to these cars as there not really mean't for speed are they?

Cheers Electric :)

I just removed the whole air filter box and fitted a Max Power cone filter directly to the throttle body. I drilled a hole in the end of the filter to house the air temp sensor. It sounded well loud but suffered from the heat as it was very close to the engine. No obvious flat spots at the time and acceleration was a lot sharper. The ECOTEC valve is also a good purchase. POTN.com for more info matey

The Max Power cone filter has 3 sleeves with it for varying diameters and a hoseclip to secure it to the throttle body or pipework. They can be bought from Motorworld or any decent motor factors and really easy to fit. Cost around £20-£30 depending on where you buy from.

Why not cure that noise which you say is from the rear box?

Genuine Toyota exhaust parts will be pricey like Honda. Nissan etc. so most people fit cloned/pattern copies. Some of these are well-engineered and have quality materials, but there is some real rubbish on the market. Maybe noise can be cured by getting another box or replacing both boxes with another brand.

Just a supporting point on genuine parts, Several years ago I replaced a honda exhaust rear section with a kwik-fit one in order to save 50 quid (90 for Kwik-fit, 140 for Honda). The Kwik-Fit one fell to pieces in a year so I replaced that with a Honda one and that was still going strong when I sold it on 18 months later. So even though the initial outlay seemed expensive, it worked out cheaper in the long run.
