Engine Questions And 2 Problems With New Car

Hi,

Bought imported st202 the other day. Beautiful to drive. But what engine do I have? I have this japanese paperwork and MOT but the log book hasn't come yet. Jap stuff has the chassis number and says engine model is 3S. Does this mean SIII. Anyone know?

Also 2 problems, a short while after sticking the air con on a loud annoying noise starts grinding from the engine compartment, rather like a fan with the bearings knackered or maybe it's the air con pump?? is there such a thing. The air con works fine on hot and very cold but there is something up. So loud people outside car look round. How embarrassing!

Also tinkling, metallic noise coming from brake? like jingle bells?!!. Years ago I had a scirrocco (Ahh, the folly of youth!) and it had these ****ty tin shims on the calipers which always bent/broke/rusted through, and made this sound.

Any help?

Hi Pye

You've probably got 3S-GE engine. Look on the timing belt cover or under bonnet, that's where the labels usually are. Your A/C noise is almost certainly the A/C compressor. There is no stripping them for repairs, just straight replacement. Tinkling noise from brakes usually means the pads are worn close to the limit. Each pad has a spring clip arranged so that the free end rubs against the disc when the pads need changing. You get a few miles before damage starts to occur, but get them inspected/changed ASAP.
